    The Brierwood member-guest tourney was played May 14-15. The format was best ball of the twosome, net and gross. Flight 1, low net: 1. Lane and Milazzo tied with Davis and Brkal, 54. In a sudden-death playoff, Lane and Milazzo won the title on the second hole. 2. Groff and Roach, 61. Low gross: 1. Holesa and Brennan, 74; 2. Doyle and Warren, 79; 3. Arney and Fitz-Gerald, 83.

  • New golfers: You have to start somewhere, but where?

    Golf is a fabulous, wonderful sport. It’s played outdoors in all kinds of weather. There’s beautiful scenery and challenges aplenty for the expert and the beginner.

    An 8-year-old can play; an 80-year-old can play. In fact, an 8-year-old boy can play a match against his 80-year-old grandpa. Name another sport where that can happen. Not basketball or tennis or baseball.

    A golfer can play in a tournament with 120 other golfers, in a foursome of friends or by himself.

    Beachcombers results from May 8. Low gross: 90, Ed Kinney; 91, Hal Riebesehl. Low nets: 66, Ed Kinney; 67, Bob Smith. Team modified Stableford: +12, Kinney, Riebesehl and Smith. Golfer of the week: Ed Kinney.

    Beachcombers results from May 15 at Carolina Shores. Low gross: 88, Hal Riebesehl; 89, Bob Smith. Low net: 64, Bob Smith; 71, Riebesehl. Team two-best ball: Smith and Jim Beairsto won 1-up over Riebesehl and Stu Cleveland. In the four-man, two best nets, Cleveland, Smith, Riebesehl and Beairsto were 26-under par. Bob Smith was golfer of the week.

    MEN’S SPORTS CLUB

    The weekly tournament was May 5. Format was one best net on the par 5s, two best nets on the par 4s and three best nets on the par 3s. Bill Kosanke, Chuck Dixon, Bob Mularczyk and Larry Agrimonti were first at -31. Cal Calhoon, John McGuirt, Ken Horton and Jack Blair tied for second at -26 with Greg Strickland, Alan Morrissey, Bill Healy and Eric Nelson. John McGuirt won two skins. Ken Horton, Ted Lide, Bill Kosanke and Larry Agrimonti each won one skin.

  • Brick Landing Rally for a Cure tournament raises $1,860

    The Brick Landing Ladies Golf Association had its annual Rally for the Cure golf tournament April 23. Fifty-four men and women participated and raised $1,860 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which supports breast cancer research and awareness programs.

  • Tournament of Champions to be played this year at St. James

    On Sept. 12, 2002, the very first Golf Gab ran in this newspaper. Since then, I have had a whole lot of fun writing about golf-related topics. I’ve met professional golfers (even Arnold Palmer once), superintendents, golf course architects, new golfers, single-digit players and ordinary people who triumph over diversity to play the game of golf.

    On trips, I’ve taken my notebook and camera with me and written about golf in Arizona and Bermuda and Texas and Georgia. If I ever get to Scotland (my dream of all dreams), I will report from there.

    Slow play is everyone’s nightmare.

    I’ve written about it before and I will continue to write about it annually because, first of all, it bugs me and, secondly, folks ask me to write about it. They want to hang my slow-play column in the locker room of their club. They want their slow-playing friends to get the hint… hint… HINT!

  • West golfers finish eighth in regional

    PINETOPS—The West Brunswick High School golf team finished eighth out of 11 teams in the Class 3-A East Regional on Monday at Maccripine Country Club.

    Playing a 6,200-yard, par-71 course on a windy day with tight pin placements made the state-qualifying tournament a challenge for all. (One foursome a West player was in had to stop play for 30 minutes because of a thunderstorm.)

    Led by medalist Spencer Whitt (70), Fike was the runaway winner (293). Five of Fike’s players shot in the 70s. Hunt second (324) and Northern Nash third (325).

    The Beachcombers played at Palmetto Greens. Low gross: 81, Hal Riebesehl; 82, Stu Cleveland; 85, Paul Michal; 87, Randy Cogdill; 88, Ed Kinney.

    Low nets: 58, Riebesehl; 62, Bob Smith and Kinney; 63, Reggie Auten; 64, Cleveland, Ed Hennessey and Bill Cameron; 67, Michal.

    Teams scored two low nets on each hole. Winning at 44-under par were Michal, Riebesehl, Auten and Cameron.

    RIEBESEHL EAGLES

    Hal Riebesehl had an eagle-2 on the par-4, 261-yard seventh hole at Palmetto Greens.

  • Meadowlands Missfits: Women's golf club makes golf fun for its members

    There are many, many golf leagues in Brunswick County. Each course has its men’s, women’s and mixed groups. If you add in the Elks, the VFW, the Fadeaways, the Calabashers, the Beachcombers, the Rebels, the Renegades, the Seniors, Ladybirds and Club 25, you can see there are literally dozens of tournaments being played each week.

    Despite dire warnings to the contrary, the game of golf is alive and well in Brunswick County.
