The PGA Superstore World Amateur Tournament celebrates its 25th anniversary this week. Golfers from 47 states and 48 countries are playing golf, walking the beach, shopping, partying and having a great time.

The World Amateur Handicap Championship was started in 1984 by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday as a way of getting folks to come here during the dog days of summer when golf courses languish half-filled in the heat and humidity.

In that first tournament, 684 golfers came to Myrtle Beach, S.C., had a great time and talked it up when they got back home.

Vince Brown scored a hole-in-one Aug. 12 on the 163-yard 12th hole of the Sea Trail Byrd course using a 5-wood.

BEACHCOMBERS

The Beachcombers played a three low-nets tournament Aug. 15 at Carolina Shores. Winning the gold medal with a score of 192 (minus 24) was the team of Bill Cameron, Jim Beairsto, Ed Hennessey and Dennis Davidson. Low gross with a score of 83 was the team of Bob Byrne, Stu Cleveland and Randy Cogdill. Low net was Dennis Davidson (63). Davidson was also voted golfer of the week.

BRICK LANDING

Pat Sandifer, widow of longtime county commissioner David Sandifer, joked she had to nail the back door of David’s office shut so he wouldn’t sneak out and play golf instead of work.

“He played every opportunity he got,” Pat Sandifer said.

It’s a fitting tribute then, she said, that an upcoming golf tournament includes two of his passions—golf and education.

The Sandpiper Bay Men’s Golf Association game Aug. 4 was Chicago, as a team effort: one point for bogey, two points for par, three points for birdie and five points for all others. Add quotas for team quota.

Piper-Bay flight: First place with 27 points over quota was the team of Bob Nicoletti, Vince Niland, Marvin Pethal and Doug Williams. Second place with 23 points was the team of Dan Alsup, Mike Matlock, Charles Richardson and Jim Wiseman. Third place with 21 points was the team of Lou Zotter, Bill Lester and Tom Ioven.
