  • Bermuda: Great people, great golf

    In the last 30 years, my husband and I have been to Bermuda 20 times.
    Only a three-hour flight from Atlanta, Bermuda lies east of us in the Atlantic Ocean. There are nine golf courses within the 21 square miles of the island. Two of them are presently closed for renovations, but will open shortly. Gene and I have played all of them.
    Some of the courses are private but become available through golf packages and Bermuda-sponsored tournaments (like the Bermuda Goodwill Open).

  • Another football honor for Napolitano

    Nick Napolitano is one of four Wingate University football student-athletes named to the 2012 Daktronics All-Super Region 2 teams, selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
    Napolitano, a sophomore defensive lineman, received second-team distinction.
    In his first season as a starter, Napolitano led Wingate with 11.5 tackles for loss (41 yards) and 7.5 quarterback sacks (32 yards). He led the SAC in QB sacks. Napolitano is seventh on the Bulldog list with 49 tackles (25 solo, 24 assists).

  • The golf industry is alive and well in the Carolinas

    Tim Kreger, the executive director of the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association, is optimistic about the golf industry.
    “We had a few down years,” he said, “but we’re on the rebound now and moving forward. The trade show in Myrtle Beach this fall was the biggest and best in over 10 years. I see positive changes taking place all over the Carolinas and elsewhere.”
    According to Tim, the numbers were up for the golf industry this year.

  • If you can’t break 100, try reading this book for help

    Last month I attended the South Carolina Writers Workshop in Myrtle Beach, S.C. For three days, I was immersed in workshops, panel discussions, critique sessions and conversations with published and unpublished authors and literary agents.    
    I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.  
    During the course of the SCWW, I met Fred Fields, author of “How Short Hitting, Bad Golfers Break 90 All the Time.”
    The title was intriguing. Break 90? All the time? How cool would that be?

  • Hensley finishes 10th in Campbell golf series

    Staff Report

    Campbell University freshman Greg Hensley recently finished 10th out of 111 golfers with 423 points during the 2012 Fall Semester Tournament Series at Campbell University.
    Hensley, a West Brunswick graduate, is enrolled in Campbell’s professional golf management program. It conducted a six-event tournament series for its students at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek.

  • Calabash VFW plays annual golf tourney

    Nov. 19 was not a good day for golf but that didn’t hinder the 128 participants in Calabash VFW Post 7288’s annual tournament at Sea Trail’s Byrd Course. The day was cloudy with a wind gusting to more than 25 mph all morning and the temperature in the mid-40s at tee time.
    With a wind chill dipping into the 20s, one golfer said, “If this were not for such a good cause, I wouldn’t be here.”

  • Golf tournaments

    Coast Guard tourney is Dec. 7
    The second annual DILI golf tournament begins at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 at Echo Farms Golf and County Club. The Wilmington Navy League is the host and the tourney benefits the Fallen Heroes scholarship fund and a Coast Guard scholarship fund at Cape Fear Community College.
    Entry fee is $75 per golfer, $300 per four-golfer team, and includes dinner. Registration is 9-10 a.m. Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony is at

    The Beachcombers played Friday at Cypress Bay. Nets: Dennis McCann, 66; Bob Smith, 70. Team two nets: Larry Cecil, Bob Byrne, Dan O’Connell and McCann, 120  (24-under par). Golfer of the week is McCann.

  • Piperettes play Sadie Hawkins tourney

    The Piperettes played their annual Sadie Hawkins Tournament Nov. 10. Thirty-six members invited a partner other than the spouse to play an 18-hole, alternate-shot tournament. The field was divided into four flights.
    Flight 1: 1. Diane Rauch and Bobby Bryce 67; 2. Dan Copeland and Jane Duvall, 68; 3. Ed Killgoar and Liz fox, 73; 4. Ron Robichaud and Mary Dickerson, 73.

    Tee off for veterans set for Nov. 24
    On Nov. 24, Rolling Thunder SC3 will play its annual golf tournament at Crown Park Golf Course. It will be a captain’s choice with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The fee is $60 per person, $240 per team. There will be a 50-50 drawing, door prizes and dinner to follow immediately after the tournament at the VFW Post 10804, 111 Highway 57, Little River, S.C.
