  • WSGA president Robinson makes golf happen for others

    Myrna Robinson lives at Lockwood Folly. Her beautiful home is on a small lake near the 15th green. She is totally into golf, though she doesn’t have much time to play.

    Why?

    Because Robinson is busy making golf happen for other women.

    “I started playing golf in my 20s and for a while played in a lot of competitions,” she said. “Now, I’m a ‘used to be’ golfer because I don’t have much time to golf anymore.”

    BRIERWOOD WGA

    In the Brierwood Women’s Golf Association match on July 1, the format was low gross, low net. In the first flight, Mona Dye had the low gross of 76 and Marje Roach had the low net of 64. In that first flight, Roach also had the fewest putts (27). In flight two, Sara Baynton had a low gross of 95 and the fewest putts (30). Mickey Salerno had a low net of 68. Janice Owens had low gross in the third flight at 101 and Florence Hopkins had the low net of 64. Ruther Linder had the fewest putts (28) in the third flight.

    CLUB 25 CROW CREEK

    Mona Dye from Brierwood shot a 75 to lead Club 25 Ladies Golf League at Crow Creek on June 16. Sandy Hulberg (Lakes) was second and Mei Lu Pierce (Myrtle Beach National) was third. Kitty Fox (Lakes) and Suzanne Moro (Wacchesaw Plantation) tied for fourth, while Dale Calhoon (Brick Landing), Shari Hodson (Lakes) and Pat Shutzman (Carolina National) tied for sixth.

    Lange wins Ed Riedel Memorial Tournament at Meadowlands

    The Players Golf Association held the fourth annual Ed Riedel Memorial Golf Tournament June 12 at the Meadowlands Golf Course.

    Finishing first with a net 65 was Bob Lange. In second by a match of cards was Bob Davis with a 66 over Jack Gorman. In fourth by a match of cards was Nick Samela with a 67 over George Griffin.

    Closest-to-the-pin winners were Pat Jones at No. 5, Bob Butkevicius at No. 8, Bill Favro at No. 11 and Ron Weatherton at No. 15.

  • Playing a real gem of a course at Jumping Brook in New Jersey

    There are many fabulous benefits in knowing how to play golf. The best of these benefits occurs when you are invited to play at a friend’s golf course.

  • Handicap scores allow beginning and experienced golfers to play together

    Lots more folks are beginning to play golf in Brunswick County.

    Kids are learning golf through The First Tee or summer golf camps. Other youngsters come to visit grandma and grandpa (who own a home right on a golf course) and soon, Granny and Poppy have their grandchildren out on the practice tee and on the course.

    In addition to our junior golfers, hundreds of new retirees are moving to our coastal communities. Many of them dreamed of playing the game of golf but never had the time to get involved.

    CAROLINA SHORES

    Gary Stewart, 72, of Carolina Shores shot his age or better four times during the month of May. He had one round of 72, two of 71 and one of 69. He played all four of those rounds at his home course of Carolina Shores.

  • Hensley and Gore the best of the best of The First Tee of Brunswick County

    Greg Hensley has been selected to represent the First Tee of Brunswick County at the 2008 Summer Leadership and Life Skills Academy July 8-15 at Kansas State University.

    He will join 100 other First Tee members from around the country and the world for a week of leadership building, life skills workshops and golf. They will stay in dormitories while being chaperoned by Kansas State students who are involved with the leadership curriculum offered at the university.

    Last year, Eric Grant represented the Brunswick County chapter of The First Tee at the Leadership Academy.

  • First Tee Wal-Mart Tournament comes to Brunswick County

    The First Tee of Brunswick County is the sole beneficiary of the inaugural Wal-Mart Invitational Sept. 23 at The Thistle Golf Club.

    All Brunswick County Wal-Mart stores will be participating in this golf tournament. Brent Guice, manager of the Shallotte Wal-Mart, will spearhead the effort.
