     BOILING SPRING LAKES – On one of the longest courses Brunswick County has to offer, competitors in the 2017 Tournament of Champions had yet another variable with which to contend during a cold, windy weekend.

    The annual Tournament of Champions pits the men’s and women’s club champions of the 18 Brunswick County golf clubs against each other in a two-day, stroke-play event, essentially pitting the best golfers in the area in tournament play.

     The men’s basketball team at Brunswick Community College got off to a blistering start in the opening weeks of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) play.

    Brunswick sports a 4-1 record after splitting a pair of contests in the Louisburg College Classic on Nov. 10-11 at Louisburg College.

  • West Brunswick drops playoff...

     WILMINGTON – West Brunswick’s 2017 varsity football season came to a painful conclusion inside a frigid Legion Stadium on Friday, Nov. 10.

    The powerful New Hanover High School Wildcats raced out to a 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the game and steamrolled their way to a 55-21 victory in the first round of the NCHSAA 3AA playoffs.

    New Hanover, which improved to 11-1 after beating West for the second time in as many months, will face No. 10-seeded Dudley in the second round of the playoffs this week in Wilmington.

     Ed Gatton and Felda Hightower, both of Greensboro, show off four keeper flounder out of the eight they caught with Capt. Buster Gillis of Buster’s Outdoors Guide Service. Gatton and Hightower landed one flounder that weighed more than five pounds. The Greensboro residents caught the flounder in the Intracoastal Waterway off Ocean Isle Beach using artificial bait.

  • Cougars top Buccaneers in Oyster...

     WINNABOW – The Southport Cougars raced out to a 27-6 lead in the Oyster Bowl on Saturday at Town Creek Park and seemed to have an answer for everything the Shallotte Buccaneers threw at them.

    Despite the deficit, the Bucs wouldn’t go away in the championship game in the senior division of the Brunswick Football League.

    The Bucs rode the speed of Jordan McCall and Jeffery Cobb to a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and trimmed the deficit to 33-20 at intermission.
