  • North Brunswick boys win third...

    The North Brunswick boys’ indoor track-and-field team won its third straight North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship Saturday, Feb. 13.

    The Scorpions dominated the jumps in the 46-team meet for 2A and 1A teams at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, finishing with a victory, two seconds and a fourth. North also did well in the hurdles, finishing 3-5-6.

    This is the Scorpions’ fifth straight NCHSAA track and field state championship. North, coached by Garry Bishop, won outdoor track state titles in 2014 and 2015.

  • South Brunswick relay fourth in...

    South Brunswick’s boys finished tied for fourth with Concord in the 200-yard freestyle relay in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state swimming meet Friday, Feb. 12, at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

    Owen Bell, Tyler Bowersox, Chris Anselmo and Matt Anselmo swam the race in 1 minute, 31.73 seconds. Bowersox swam the final lap 0.02 seconds quicker than Concord’s final swimmer, and that led to the dead heat.

    Three teams swam the race quicker than 1:30. Chapel Hill won in 1:28.42 and went on to win the state title.

    The N.C. State gymnastics team won a tri-meet Friday, Feb. 12, at UNC Chapel Hill. N.C. State scored 194.050 points in defeating host UNC and William and Mary.

    The Tar Heels were second (193.000) and the Tribe third (192.400).

    Twelve top-five finishes highlighted the Wolfpack’s outing, with victories from Brittni Watkins on bars and Nicole Wild on beam and two career-high marks from Paris Phillips.

  • West Brunswick beats Topsail in...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Topsail 52-46 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference girls’ basketball game Feb. 9.

    Logan Locklear scored 15 points, Natyra Gore 12 and Jaida Allen nine for the Trojans, who improved to 3-8 in the conference, 9-12 overall. Dyna Jeffries scored six points, Gwenna Gentle and Breanna Mercer each scored four points and Bria Bond two points.

    Topsail also is 3-8 in the conference. The victory kept West alive for the No. 1 3A team from the conference for the state playoffs. Topsail had beaten West 46-35 Jan. 15.

  • North Brunswick girls lose to...

    Taylor Perkins scored 14 points and Unique Hines 13 in North Brunswick’s 65-58 conference basketball loss Feb. 9 at Northside.

    Kayla Stephens scored 34 points for Northside, 8-1 and tied for first in the East Central Conference, 18-3 overall. North is 5-4 and third in the conference, 14-7.

    Northside led 36-31 at halftime and outscored the Scorpions 17-12 in the third quarter on the way to the victory.

  • West Brunswick’s Ruppart wins...

    West Brunswick senior Dustin Ruppart won the 200-yard freestyle Saturday, Feb. 6, in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A Eastern Regional swimming championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center.

    The event was a qualifier for the state meet, set to begin 1:45 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh. The top eight times qualify for state.

    Ruppart won the race in 1 minute, 48.45 seconds. His winning margin was 1.03 seconds.

    LELAND — North Brunswick beat Dixon 62-50 in an East Central Conference girls’ basketball game Friday, Feb. 5, at North.

    North led 23-17 at the half and outscored Dixon 22-12 in the third quarter on the way to the victory.

    North improved to 5-3 in the conference, 14-6 overall. Dixon dropped to 7-15.

    For the victorious Scorpions, junior Taylor Perkins scored 30 points. She also had nine steals, four assists and four rebounds, according to statistics at MaxPreps.com.

  • Trojan wrestlers reach regional...

    The West Brunswick wrestling team lost 34-33 to unbeaten and eventual state champion Morehead in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A East Regional duals tournament Feb. 4 in Asheboro.

    West, coached by Jimmy Caraway, finishes the team season 22-3. (The NCHSAA individual regional is next weekend at Corinth Holders High School and the individual state tournament is the following weekend.)
