    Hed: Tennis players qualify for regional

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH — South Brunswick senior Dalton Adams and sophomore John Pratt and won the Mideastern Conference 3A championship tennis tournament April 28 at Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center.

    The South doubles team beat West Brunswick’s Kevin Gore and Tyler Mayo in three sets.

    All four players also qualified for a North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A regional, which is a qualifier for the state tournament.

    The Ashley High School baseball team beat West 3-2 April 28 in Wilmington, ending the Trojans’ 19-game winning streak.

    The Screaming Eagles scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a double, an intentional walk and a single.

    The loss prevented West from clinching a tie for the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference title. West is 9-1 in the conference with two games left. The Trojans are 20-2 overall.

    West pitcher Kevin Powers gave up four hits and one earned run in seven innings. He walked one, hit one and struck out five.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Topsail 4-1 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference baseball game April 26 on Mike Alderson Field.

    The victory was West’s 19th straight this season, giving it an overall record of 20-1. They are 9-0 in the conference and can clinch the MEC title by beating Ashley High School on April 28.

    Winning pitcher Johnathan Carlyle gave up four hits in seven innings. He is 7-0. His ERA is 0.75. He leads the team in innings pitched (55.2).

    LELAND — Landon Patterson led his teammates to a golf championship Monday.

    Teammates and others guided Patterson through the toughest 18 holes of his life.

    Patterson, mourning the recent death of brother Harrison Taylor, shot West’s lowest score as the Trojans won the 3A title of the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference championship golf tournament Monday, April 25, at Magnolia Greens Golf Course.

    “It was tough,” Patterson said. “I thought about Harrison, my brother, and I decided to do it for him.”

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick senior infielders Zachary Johnson and Tristan Lewis signed letters of intent April 26 to attend Brunswick Community College and play baseball.

    “I’m excited,” BCC coach Robbie Allen said. “We’ve always tried to recruit the kids from our county, and getting these two guys, that’s a big step. These two are from good families and are good players.”

    Johnson has played third base and first base this season.

    BOILING SPRING LAKES — West Brunswick beat South Brunswick 7-3 in a Mideastern Conference 3A/4A Conference girls’ lacrosse game Friday.

    The Trojans outscored South 4-0 in the second half in completing the season sweep of the Cougars.

    For West (2-8 in the MEC), senior Sarah Poulin scored three goals and freshman Gwenna Gentle scored two goals. Sophomore Ana Poulin and freshman Kara Cheers each scored for the first time this season.

    For South (0-10 in the MEC), Kristen Ruffato scored twice. Ashton Van Ness also scored.

    South beat West 10-2 in the boys’ lacrosse game Friday at South Brunswick.

    For West, winless this season, St. Andrews University signee Austin Mokma scored two goals in the fourth quarter, the second in the final minute when South was down two players because of penalties.

    For South, Garrett Evans scored three times, Liam Bodnar twice and Caleb Walker twice. Vince Fuller, Justin Keith and Shawn Grisso also scored.

    Jeremiah Baldwin was the winning goalkeeper.
