  • Local runners do well in Run for...

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH —  Local runners finished in the top three in the half marathon Jan. 14 in the 13th annual Ocean Isle Beach Run for Food.

    Garin Krahn, 26, of Sneads Ferry, ran the 13 miles in 1 hour, 20.11 seconds, a pace of 6:08 per mile. Logan Scharen, 23, of Bolivia was second in 1:22.44. Luke Evans, 16, of Asheboro, was third in 1:23.14.

    The top female runner was Charlotte Leighton, 36, of Clayton. She finished 10th overall in 1:33.46, a pace of 7:10 per mile.

  • West Brunswick to host FCA...

    West Brunswick will be host to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes football coaches clinic 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Jan. 21 in the two gyms.

    “We are inviting all high school, middle school and recreation football coaches to attend,” West assistant football coach T.J. Spivey said.

  • New Hanover sweeps Trojan teams...

    The New Hanover boys are 5-1 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference, 14-4 overall. West Brunswick is 4-2, 12-4.

    The New Hanover girls are 6-0 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference, 15-2 overall. West is 2-4, 8-9.

  • Lady Scorpions win; 3-0 in ECC

    LELAND — North Brunswick beat Dixon 65-29 Jan. 13 in a girls’ basketball game at North.

    The victory sets up a game for first place in the East Central Conference Jan. 20 at Northside-Jacksonville. Each team is 3-0 in the ECC. North is 13-2 overall; Northside, 14-3.

    Against Dixon (0-3 6-10), senior Taylor Perkins scored 28 points. Perkins hit 12-of-16 2-pointers. She had seven steals.

  • Lady Trojans beat Ashley in...

    New Hanover beat West Brunswick 73-39 in a conference girls’ basketball game Jan. 13 at West.

    New Hanover (6-0, 15-2) had beaten West 67-20 Dec. 14 in Wilmington. West is 2-4, 8-9.

     In the rematch, the Wildcats led 17-8 after the first quarter and 31-14 with 3 minutes, 50 seconds left in the half. The lead was 46-16 with 6:38 left in the third quarter and 61-31 with 5:22 left in the game.

    LELAND — The 13th annual Leland Hot Stove League banquet was Jan. 14 at the North Brunswick High School gym.

    This yearly event recognizes and honors the Leland Hot Stove North Brunswick Player of the Year and the Nelson Best Scholarship.

    Jaheed Cason is the recipient of the Nelson Best Scholarship. Cason isa baseball player at Belmont Abbey. The scholarship is worth $2,500.

    SHALLOTTE — Laney defeated West Brunswick 57-18 in a wrestling match Jan. 12 at West between the two unbeaten teams in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference.

    Laney is 19-1 overall. West is 19-3.

    The conference championships are Jan. 28 at Hoggard. State duals are Jan. 31, Feb. 2 and Feb. 4.

  • Trojans defeat Topsail in...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Topsail 63-52 in a boys’ basketball game Monday night between 3A teams. West is 3-1 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference, 11-3 overall. Topsail is 0-5, 8-7.

    Senior guard Brandyn Parker hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 26 points.

    Bryce Ahrens scored 10 points, Khalil Bland eight and Rasheed Daniels and Josh Woodard six each. Kaleb Hewett, Caleb Gilbert and Tariq Thomas each scored two points. J’vian McCray scored one point.

  • South’s boys dominate tri-meet

    BOLIVIA — The South Brunswick boys’ swim team won all 11 events — 10 of them in regional standards — in finishing first in a tri-meet with fellow 3A teams Topsail and West Brunswick.

    South scored 129.50 points, Topsail 84.50 and West 45 in the meet Jan. 6 at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

    This is the second straight meet South has swept all 11 races and attained regional standards in 10 of them.
