     BOLIVIA— West Brunswick senior Cameryn Smith won the NCHSAA class 3A East Regional golf tournament Monday, Oct. 20, at Carolina National Golf Club.

    Smith shot a 73 and finished one stroke ahead of defending state champion Siranon Shoomee of Lee County.

    “I feel petty good about that,” Smith said when asked how she felt about beating the 2013 state champion. “I felt she was my main competitor.”

    Shoomee played in the foursome ahead of Smith.

    Adam Cornelius, 31, of Rockwell, won the North Carolina Oyster Festival 10K race Sunday, Oct. 19, at Ocean Isle Beach. He finished the 6.2-mile race in 37 minutes, 00.10 seconds.

    Mark McGeough, 44, of Ocean Isle Beach, was second in 38:12.1. Lunsford King, 49, of Wrightsville Beach, was third in 39:58.

    The top finisher in the women’s 10K was Monica Litsas, 22, of Columbia, S.C., in 42:22.

  • Scorpions rally in fourth...

     North Brunswick scored twice in the final quarter to beat Croatan 21-12 Friday, Oct. 17, on football Homecoming Night in Leland.

    The Scorpions improved to 1-1 in the East Central 2A conference, 4-4 overall. Croatan is 1-1, 5-3.

    Croatan had  scored and taken a 12-7 lead with about 7 minutes, 44 seconds left in the game. North stopped the 2-point conversion.

    The South Brunswick volleyball team beat Southern Guilford 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-12 in a first-round game of the North Carolina High School class 3A state playoffs Friday, Oct. 17 at South. For the Cougars (15-5), Kelsi Kazmierzak had 10 kills. Cali Watson had eight kills, four aces and three blocks. Caylen Folmar had seven kills and five aces. Kimmie Williams had seven aces. Cassidy Clifton had 20 digs.

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat Topsail 42-7 on football Homecoming Night Friday, Oct. 17.

    As has been the case all season, West’s running backs were unstoppable as the Trojans improved to 2-1 in the conference, 4-4 overall, with three games left in the conference season.

  • Cameryn Smith wins final MEC...

    Cameryn Smith shot a 75 and won the final Mideastern 3A/4A Conference golf tournament of the season Oct. 13 on the Nicklaus Pines Course at the Country Club of Landfall. 

    Smith, a senior, was the only golfer to break 80 on the 5,628-yard course in winning the championship. Caroline Cahill, a Laney High School sophomore, shot an 81 and finished second.

    On the front nine, Smith shot a 38 and Cahill a 39. On the back nine, Smith shot a 37 and Cahill a 42.

  • Napolitano named SAC Defensive...

     Wingate University senior defensive end Nick Napolitano (West Brunswick) is the South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Napolitano receives this honor for the second time this season and in his career.

    Napolitano had 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback sack as the Bulldogs defeated Catawba 30-19 Saturday, Oct. 11.

    Napolitano also had four quarterback hurries and broke up one pass.

    He forced a fumble and leads the NCAA and the SAC in forced fumbles (four).

  • Trojans hold off Cougars 27-24

    The West Brunswick junior varsity beat South Brunswick 21-16 Thursday, Oct. 9, at West.

    West scored on the opening drive on a 7-yard quarterback keeper by Owen McDowell. Terrance Clarida kicked the extra point.

    West fell behind 16-7 but Michael Bryant scored in the third quarter to cut the lead to 16-13.The two pointer failed. 

    West got the ball back with 54 seconds left in the game. 

  • Middle school, high school cross...

     Brunswick County middle schools completed their first season of cross country Wednesday, Oct. 1, in a meet at West Brunswick High School. The girls and boys ran together in a 2-mile race.

    The girls’ top finisher was Bailey Lawson of Waccamaw. The next two fastest runners were from South Brunswick Middle School: Haleigh McKeithan and Caroline Moore.

    The three fastest runners were boys: Alex Younts of Shallotte Middle School was first. Jaxon Hudson of South Brunswick Middle School was second. Jose Velasquez of Shallotte Middle School was third.

  • Yarbrough finishes second in...

     The 2014 auto racing season became memorable for car owner Chad McCumbee and driver Sam Yarbrough when they had a second-place finish in the NASCAR-sanctioned MDCU 300 Sunday, Oct. 5, at Martinsville, Va.

    The finish was the highlight of the year for the team, who a few weeks earlier had clinched a second straight Late Model season championship at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway.
