  • Brunswick West opens with two...

    The Brunswick West Debs have won their first two games in the Dixie Softball World Series in Monroe, La.

    If the Debs win Tuesday (too late for this edition), they play for the championship Wednesday. If the Debs lose Tuesday, they still will have a chance to play for the championship.

    Brunswick opened the 10-team series Aug. 1 by beating Virginia (Crewe-Burkeville) 10-9.

    Myah Morse was the starting and winning pitcher, throwing four innings. Emily Clemmons threw three innings in relief. They gave up eight hits.

  • McCumbee, McAleer win, take lead...

    Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer won for the second time this season in an IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race.

    McCumbee and McAleer finished first in the Street Tuner class Saturday, July 25, at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn.

    They drove the No. 5 ModSpace Mazda MX-5 and gave C.J. Wilson Racing the lead in the point standings. Wilson is a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

  • Brunswick West Debs win state...

    BURGAW — Brunswick West defeated Brunswick North 11-0 Wednesday, July 22, in the title game of the Dixie Softball Debs state tournament.

    The victory advanced Brunswick as North Carolina’s representative to the Dixie Debs World Series Aug. 1-5 in Monroe, La.

    Brunswick won state last year and finished second in the World Series. Members returning from that team are Caroline Gore, Skylar Wickel, McKenzie Benton, Myah Morse and Ashley Smith.

  • Brunswick West Belles finish...

    BURGAW — Brunswick West lost 6-3 to Lumberton in the title game Wednesday night, July 22, of the Dixie Softball Belles state tournament.

    After loading the bases in the top of the fourth inning, Lumberton scored four runs on a fielder’s choice, a single and a double in taking a 4-1 lead.

    Lumberton scored twice in the sixth in taking a 6-1 lead. Brunswick scored twice in the bottom of the sixth in cutting the lead to 6-3.

  • Gray Cheers plays in All-Star...

    GREEENSBORO — Gray Cheers finished his high school basketball career with the highest state honor possible: playing in the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star basketball game.

    Cheers, a West Brunswick graduate, was one of 10 players on the East team in the game Monday night, July 20, at Greensboro Coliseum.

  • Brunswick Boys, Junior Boys lose...

    The Brunswick County Dixie Boys and Junior Boys Baseball teams lost in state championship games Thursday, July 16, at Smithville Park.

    Hope Mills beat Brunswick 9-6 in winning the Junior Boys state title.

    Hope Mills led 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth and then scored six runs in taking advantage of Brunswick errors.

  • County softball teams set to...

    Six county teams have begun competition in the Dixie Softball state tournaments in Burgaw.

    Brunswick West and Brunswick North are competing in the Debs tourney. West Brunswick is competing in the Belles tourney. West Brunswick and Leland are competing in the Ponytails tourney.

    The Debs tourney consists of two other teams besides West and North: West Stanly and Cherryville. The winner advances to the Dixie World Series Aug. 1-5 in Monroe, La.

  • Brunswick Dixie Junior Boys win...


    The Brunswick Dixie Junior Boys won its first-round game in the state baseball tournament, beating Duplin County 12-2 in five innings Saturday, July 11, at Smithville District Park.

    Brunswick finished with six hits. Bradley Adams two hits. Tanner Babson had a double. Brandon Aycock had a single and one RBI. Shawn Smith and Deilon Frink also had hits.

  • Hope Mills ends Brunswick’s...

    SHALLOTTE — Hope Mills beat Brunswick County 6-0 in nine innings Monday, July 6, on Mike Alderson Field and finished a three-game sweep in the first round of the American Legion Baseball playoffs.

    Brunswick was held to six hits and struck out 14 times against two pitchers. Chris Graham had a single and a double. Caleb Clemmons also had a double.

    Brunswick turned a double play but also made five errors.

    Hope Mills finished with 10 hits and no errors. It struck out seven times against three pitchers.
