  • Croatan defeats North Brunswick...

     LELAND — Croatan scored three first-half goals and went on to beat North Brunswick 3-2 in an East Central Conference soccer game Sept. 28.

    Croatan is 1-1 in the six-team conference, 5-6 overall. North is 0-1-1, 8-2-3 overall.

    The Cougars scored 1 minutes, 47 seconds into the game on a shot into the upper left of the goal.

    Croatan scored twice in the final 6:04 of the half. A low shot rolled inside the left post in giving Croatan a 2-0 lead.

  • West Brunswick beats South...

     Staff Report

    West Brunswick beat South Columbus 6-3 in a non-conference tennis match Sept. 26 at Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center.

    West won four singles matches.

    At No. 3, senior Emily Long won 6-4, 6-2. At No. 4, junior Bianca Desimone won 6-4, 6-2. At No. 5, junior Rylee Jones won 6-7 (9-11), 6-0, 11-9. At No. 6, senior Catherine Cheatham won 6-4, 6-2.

    West won two doubles matches.

    At No. 2, Desimone and senior McKenzie Winberg won 8-4. At No. 3, Cheatham and sophomore Madison Ward won 8-3.

    WILMINGTON —  West Brunswick defeated the  Ashley Screaming Eagles 28-6 as both teams opened their Mideastern 3A/4A Conference football season Friday, Sept. 23, at Ashley.

    West is 1-0, 5-1. Ashley is 0-1, 2-2. West’s next game is its homecoming, Sept. 30 against Topsail (0-1, 2-4).

    The Trojans’ Anthony McCray scored a touchdown in each quarter and, according to West Brunswick staff statistics, gained 199 yards on 26 carries. He also caught two passes for 21 yards.

  • Trojans hold off North Brunswick...

    SHALLOTTE — In a hard-fought intra-county football game Friday, Sept. 16, between the West Brunswick Trojans and the North Brunswick Scorpions, West was able to hold off a late charge by North and win 24-21. The game was intense, as each team scored twice in the second quarter and once in the fourth quarter.

    The 33rd year of Wayne Smith’s dove hunt, on fields just outside Shallotte, begins like any other.

    Well, almost like any other.

    It is nearly 11 a.m. Sept. 10. On the warm, sunny morning, Wayne Smith is tending to the last-minute preparations for the banquet that precedes the hunt.

  • Trojan wrestler Harrison...

    West Brunswick senior Harrison Campbell received the Roy Heverly Award on Friday, Sept. 16, in recognition of being the top underclassman scholastic wrestler in eastern North Carolina. The award was announced in June and Campbell was presented it during halftime of the football game between North Brunswick and West Brunswick.

    “It means a lot,” Campbell said after receiving the award. “All the hard work and dedication put into the sport, it all gets paid back at times like this.”
