  • County golf squads compete in...

     South Brunswick and West Brunswick finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in a Mideastern Conference golf match Sept. 13 at The Lakes at Boiling Spring Lakes.

    Laney won the nine-hole team event, which was played on the 2,767-yard par 36 in Brunswick County.

    Laney’s Jayla Rogers captured medalist honors with a 3-over par 39, while Hoggard’s Anna Moore finished as runner-up with a 5-over 41.

    Laney (133) bested Hoggard (164) by 31 strokes to capture its fourth consecutive team win of the 2017 season.

  • Byrd fights for spot on European...

     Zack Byrd has spent the last year playing on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa after a decorated golf career at Coastal Carolina University. Byrd, a Carolina Shores native, was once one of the top junior golfers in North Carolina. Now Byrd is in the second stage of qualifying school for a position on the European Tour. 

  • North Brunswick drops...

     LELAND - The North Johnston Panthers scored the winning touchdown with one minute left in the fourth quarter to hand the North Brunswick Scorpions a heartbreaking loss on Friday, Sept. 8 in Leland. The Scorpions played an excellent game but fell to 0-4 for the season.

    North Johnston quarterback Trey Whitley hit Kenneth Lee with a 32-yard touchdown pass with a minute left in the game to give the visiting Panthers a 25-22 victory over North Brunswick.

  • South Brunswick knocks off...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES - The West Brunswick High School volleyball team visited South Brunswick High School for a rivalry matchup on Thursday, Sept 7.

    The Cougars (5-2, 2-2 conference) emerged victorious in a closely contested game featuring two of the Mideastern Conference’s 3A squads.  

  • Lumberton hands West Brunswick...

     The West Brunswick varsity football team lost its second game of the season by one possession, this time a 21-14 setback on the road against the 4A Lumberton Pirates.

    The Trojans seized an early 7-0 lead when quarterback Owen McDowell found wide receiver Noah Johnson for a 46-yard scoring strike.

    Lumberton got within one point of the Trojans with less than a minute remaining in the first half as Braylan Grice scored on a five-yard touchdown run.

    The Pirates took the lead, 14-7, on a 62-yard scoring strike from Grice to Kwashek Breeden.

     Last week was a tough one. I’ve lived in Brunswick County for 22 years now and I know to take approaching hurricanes seriously.

    A hurricane is one thing. A storm of Irma’s caliber is nothing to scoff at, folks.

  • Lessons from Grandpa still...

     It has been an extremely busy season for me this year. I can’t express enough gratitude for those who have chosen to go fishing with me, read my articles and keep up with me on Facebook. The Ocean Isle Fishing Center has also been a great partner in attracting a great customer base, great office space and a well-maintained dock to attract those customers.

  • Trojan soccer team improves to 3...

     SHALLOTTE – The West Brunswick High School varsity boys’ soccer team improved to 3-1 with an undefeated week.

    The Trojans defeated the South Columbus Stallions on Aug. 29 before handing the Whiteville Wolfpack a loss Aug. 30. West Brunswick capped its perfect week with a 3-0 victory Friday, Sept. 1, over South Columbus in Tabor City.
