  • Long perseveres, will play...

     Talking about the future, Abbey Long thought about the past.

    If it were not for her eighth-grade soccer coach, Chris Sanders, Long may have never played soccer in high school.

    “He was my first soccer coach,” Long said. “I thank him for helping me and pushing me to become what I am today.

    Fortified with confidence, Long played soccer at West Brunswick. Last season, she made second-team all-conference. And now she has signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Cape Fear Community College.

  • West Green opens summer league...

     The West Brunswick High School summer baseball season began Monday, and the West Green team beat Hoggard 10-7 in a seven-inning game in Shallotte.

    For the first time, West has two teams in a summer league—the other is the Black team—and they are competing in the Southeast Division of the Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League. Other teams in the league are Pender, Laney and Ashley. Teams play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The season lasts through July 18. Playoffs begin July 22.

    NEBULON—Jonathan Caldwell’s bases-loaded single to right field in the bottom of the seventh brought home two runs and lifted Monroe Piedmont to a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over North Brunswick Saturday in the second game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A baseball championship series Saturday at Five County Stadium.

    The victory gave the Panthers a sweep of the series after taking Friday night’s opener 9-3.

    ZEBULON— Monroe Piedmont exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning and coasted to a 9-3 triumph over North Brunswick on Friday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A baseball championship series at Five County

    Stadium.

    Cameron Price led Piedmont with three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. He had a single, a double and a triple in four trips to the plate. Hunter Purser also had three hits for the winners. Colby Barnette hit safely twice.

  • Stocks, Jones named West’s top...

     During the West Brunswick Senior Awards program May 29, Hannah Stocks and Markel Jones were named athletes of the year.

    Stocks was all-conference and team captain in softball and volleyball.

    Jones was all-conference in three sports: football, basketball and baseball. Jones will continue his baseball career at North Carolina State University.

    In other awards, Allison Brown was the one-time recipient of the Jerry W. Jones and Kyle M. Jones Memorial Scholarship.

     PITTSBORO—North Brunswick beat Northwood 10-5 Monday night in winning the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A East Regional and qualifying for the state championship series.

    North was six outs from elimination in the second game of the regional before rallying for a 6-5 victory Saturday. North coach Dustin Medlin said he felt the team was set to play well on Monday.
