  • BCC Classic is Dec. 17-19

    The BCC Christmas Classic is Dec. 17-19. The BCC men play Caldwell Community College at 6 p.m. Dec. 17, Wallace State Community College (Alabama) at 8 p.m. Dec. 18 and Harcum College (Pennsylvania) at 8 p.m. Dec. 19. The NJCAA ranks Harcum No. 6 in Division I community college teams,

    Cape Fear, Harcum and Wallace played in the NJCAA Division I national tournament last season. Caldwell lost in the NJCAA Division III title game last season.

  • West Brunswick wrestlers defeat...

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick wrestling team beat Laney and Ashley in the Trojans’ first conference matches of the season Wednesday, Dec. 3, at West.

    Laney and Ashley are Class 4A teams. The Trojans, a Class 3A team, won five of the last six matches by fall en route to the 44-29 victory against Laney. West had eight falls in its 69-12 victory against Ashley.

    The key victory was against Laney, and it put West in good position to contend for the regular-season conference title. West has four conference matches left.

  • Napolitano is Division II...

    Nick Napolitano is one of five Wingate University football student-athletes named to the Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II football teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

    Wingate graduate student offensive lineman Will Poteat (Vale) is a first-team pick. Four Bulldogs received second-team laurels: redshirt senior tight end Brandon Ellington (Wilmington), redshirt senior defensive back Jon Jimenez (Scottsdale, Ariz.), junior linebacker Eric Mapoles (Snellville, Ga.) andNapolitano (Shallotte), a senior defensive end.

  • Trojans win basketball tourney...

    The West Brunswick boys’ basketball team won the Larry Holden Thanksgiving tournament Nov. 29 at North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte.

    The Trojans played the Community School of Davidson Nov. 28 and won 63-45. 

    Saadiq Johnson hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points. Gray Cheers added 11 points and Alex Clarida seven.

  • Trojans, Scorpions wrestle in...

     SHALLOTTE— The West Brunswick and North Brunswick wrestling teams competed in a four-team meet Nov. 25 at West.

    In the match of local interest, West beat North 57-15. West gained 36 of its points by forfeits. In the matches that were wrestled, West and North each won four.

    At 126, West’s Lincoln Smith beat Bradley Hamilton by second-period fall.

    At 132, West’s Jyquan Green won by fall with 20 seconds left in the first period.

    At 145, North’s Patrick Burton defeated David Frazier 5-3.

  • Johnston finishes first season...

     

    Former West Brunswick soccer player Connor Johnston has completed his first soccer season at William Peace University.

    He started nine of 10 conference games at goalkeeper. He finished tied for third in saves (56).

    For the season, he started 15 of 16 games and finished fourth in saves (94). One of those saves was against a penalty kick. His goals-against-average in the two-year-old soccer program was 3.57.

  • Trojans open basketball season...

     SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick boys’ basketball team beat Lincoln Charter 60-45 in the Trojans’ season-opening game Saturday, Nov. 22.

    Gray Cheers scored 20 points, Jon Jordan nine and Saadiq Johnson eight.

    The Trojans held Lincoln scoreless in the first 4 minutes, 7 seconds of the third quarter in taking a 32-22 lead. From 1:26 in the third quarter to 6:40 in the fourth quarter, West again held Lincoln scoreless as the Trojans extended their 36-28 lead to 47-28.

  • Swim teams open season

     BOLIVIA — Four South Brunswick relays swam regional qualifying times in their season-opening swim meet Friday, Nov. 21 at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

    In all, South had automatic times in 11 events and West Brunswick automatically qualified in three events.

    These are the automatic qualifiers for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association regional, set for Feb. 6 and Feb. 7.

  • North’s Graham signs with UNCG;...

     LELAND — North Brunswick baseball seniors Chris Graham and Shelton Perkins signed baseball national letters of intent Nov. 18. Graham, an outfielder, signed with UNC Greensboro. Perkins, a pitcher and shortstop, signed with East Carolina University.

    Both were members of the Scorpion team that finished second in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A state playoffs two seasons ago. Perkins was a Class 2A All-State selection in 2014 by the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association.
