  • Rivers Edge is back with new...

    It takes a lot of guts to close a golf course in the middle of the summer, but that’s exactly what East Coast Golf Management did.

    Rivers Edge, a beautiful Arnold Palmer Design on the bluffs overlooking the Shallotte River, installed Paspallum Greens in 2009. They were supposed to be the best greens for a course in this location, a salt-tolerant warm-season grass.

  • McCumbee-McAleer driver wins race

    Danny Bender, racing for McCumbee-McAleer Racing, scored his first career Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup victory Saturday, Aug. 29.

    Bender won at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. En route to the win, Bender also was the Battery Tender Hard Charger, improving 12 positions.

    This was the second victory of the season for McCumbee-McAleer Racing, based in Supply. McCumbee, as a substitute driver, won the other race.

    LELAND — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21 in a non-conference volleyball match Aug. 27 at North.

    The match was the third of the season for West. North is 3-3.

    West had played the previous evening and won in five sets against South Columbus. West coach Sue Karrs said the Trojans were feeling the effects of that effort when it played North.

    “We had a really tough match last night,” she said. “It went five. We had a really intense game. We played well. We won 16-14 the last game.

    West Brunswick beat Lumberton 8-2 Aug. 26 in a non-conference soccer game.
