  • Scorpion teams win East Central...

    LELAND — The North Brunswick girls’ and boys’ track and field teams won the East Central Conference track and field championships May 2 at Garry Bishop Stadium.

    North’s girls scored 176 points. Croatan was second (121.5) in the seven-team meet.

    North’s boys scored 224 points. Croatan was second (103) in the seven-team meet.

    In the girls’ meet, North won five individual events and used its depth to win the championship.

    LELAND — East Duplin beat North Brunswick 8-4 and won the East Central Conference softball championship May 4.

    The Panthers finished with 10 hits, four of them in the first inning as they took a 3-0 lead.

    A triple and a wild pitch led to the first of four runs in the fourth inning and a 7-0 lead.

    The Scorpions scored their four runs in the final inning. Singles by Kerrin Mailhot, Kelsey Ray and Aliah Johnson led to three runs. The fourth run scored on a wild pitch.

  • Pitt sweeps BCC in three-game...

    Brunswick Community College lost three baseball games to Pitt in the final games of the NJCAA Division II Region 10 regular season. BCC finishes second in the region (21-5) and Pitt first (22-2)

    The Brunswick Community College baseball team lost the lead late in a 14-4 defeat to Pitt Community College on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at four with Pitt batting in the top of the seventh when Caleb Beatty singled off of McKinley Stanbery, driving in one run.

  • Trojans MEC tournament champions

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick Trojans won the MEC playoffs May 4, adding the playoff championship trophy to the regular season championship they won a week ago.

    This championship game featured the third matchup of the season between the powerful teams from West and Topsail. For the third successive time this season, the Trojans defeated the Pirates 2-1 in an epic battle in Shallotte.

  • State champions Watson, Burton...

    LELAND — Before signing his letter of intent Friday to wrestle at Campbell University, North Brunswick senior Tyrone Watson Jr. looped his black-and-orange striped tie many times. He spent more time adjusting his tie than he did wrestling some of the foes in his high school career.

    Watson and teammate Patrick Burton signed to attend Campbell in a ceremony in the North Brunswick gym.

    “It is the first time in school history that anybody has ever signed for wrestling, and especially for DI,” North coach Thomas York said.

  • BCC, Pitt to play for regular-...

    The Brunswick Community College and Pitt Community College baseball teams will play a weekend series at Founders Field to determined the NCJAA Division II Region 10 regular season champion.

    They will play a doubleheader Saturday, May 6, starting at noon. They will play a single game Sunday, May 7.

    Pitt freshman pitcher Shelton Perkins, a North Brunswick graduate, is 9-0 with a 2.44 ERA. Former teammate Chris Graham is the leadoff hitter for BCC and is batting, through 43 games, .378 with 30 RBIs.

  • Trojans beat Ashley on Senior...

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick Trojans defeated the Ashley Screaming Eagles 10-2 Friday to clinch the Mideastern 3A/4A conference title and home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

    It was an emotional night as the four senior players on the team — Haley Long, McKenzie Benton, Mackenzie Williams and Emily Clemmons — were recognized in a pregame ceremony, along with their parents, for their contributions to the team in their four years at West Brunswick.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick senior Harrison Campbell has accepted an offer to wrestle for Duke University.

    “It’s a really good school,” Campbell said. “I connected really good with the coaches. It is a good environment. The degree is really going to pay off in the future.”

    Glen Lanham is the Duke coach. He was introduced as Duke wrestling head coach in April 2012

  • Beeler’s one-hitter clinches tie...

    Hampstead — The West Brunswick Trojan softball team took a major step toward winning the Mideastern 3A/4A title by defeating the Topsail Pirates on their home field 1-0 April 25.  This was Topsail’s second conference loss of the season, both losses to West Brunswick. The Trojans have one loss and a victory against Ashley April 28at home will give the Trojans the conference title.
