    Capt. Brant McMullan once said, “You can’t fight the urge to fish, but you also can’t fight Mother Nature...Adapt.”
    A perfect forecast for Saturday had fishermen in a frenzy all week. All that offseason preparation business hits critical mass once an opportunity to head offshore finally surfaces. The winds were forecast to be light and variable, a fisherman’s two favorite words, and it was clear this would be the first true opportunity to make a run for the blue water.

    My boss, N.C. State information director Ed Seaman, asked me to go upstairs to Jim Valvano’s office and write a story about all the presents he had received. It was 30 years ago, a week after the Wolfpack won the 1983 NCAA Tournament championship.
    There was so much stuff, I had to tiptoe around the Santa-sized bags of mail, the shiny red-leather chair with “NCAA champions” engraved on a plate, and all manner of nice things exalting wolves and cardiac comebacks.

  • West varsity softball team beats...

     The West Brunswick softball team beat Victor (N.Y.) High School 7-4 April 3 in a final-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational.

    Victor scored its runs on a three-run home run in the third inning and a home run in the fourth inning.

    Caroline Gore pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up no runs and two hits. She walked no one and struck out eight—five in a row in the fifth through seventh innings.

    West scored in five of its six innings.

  • West JV baseball team beats...

     The West Brunswick junior varsity baseball team beat the Harrells Christian Academy varsity 14-3 in five innings in a final-round game April 3 in the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational.

    West scored 12 runs on six hits and three errors in the second inning.

    With the bases loaded and one out, Hunter Ashburn singled home two runs to tie the score. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Charlie Carcich was safe on a fielder’s choice. A walk loaded the bases and a walk to Zack Johnson forced in a run.

  • West defeats South in 10 innings...

     The West Brunswick baseball team advanced to the title game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational by beating South Brunswick 7-6 in 10 innings April 2.

    West won the game when a two-out flyball hit by Landon Tilley popped in and out of the glove of the South center fielder. The error allowed courtesy runner Brett Babson to score. Babson was running for Hunter Howard, who had led off the inning with a single. Babson went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Darguzas and moved to third when Dylan Darguzas flied out.

  • Lady Trojans defeat East Forsyth

     The West Brunswick varsity softball team beat East Forsyth 12-2 in six innings April 2 in a second-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational in Shallotte.

    Ariana Thomas was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Hannah Stocks was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Ashley Smith was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

    Winning pitcher Caroline Gore was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. She gave up two hits (one was a home run), one earned run and one unearned run in five innings. She stuck out five and walked four.

  • West baseball team wins opener...

     The West Brunswick baseball team beat Winslow Township (Atco, N.J.) 11-0 in five innings a first-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational Monday night in Shallotte.

    Brett Babson threw a no-hitter for four innings and reliever Johnnie Turner gave up one hit in the shutout. Babson walked four, hit two and struck out seven.

    West continued to be aggressive on the basepaths, twice using the delayed double steal in a three-run first inning.

  • Trojans’ track teams defeat...

     The West Brunswick track and field teams beat West Bladen in a meet March 28 in Shallotte.

    In the boys’ meet, Nolan Scoggins won the 100-meter hurdles race in 15.28 seconds (a regional-qualifying time) and the 300-meter hurdles race in 41.95. He won the long jump (20-feet, 2 inches) and tied for first in the 100-meter dash (11.23).

    Spencer Waters won the 800 in 2:12 and the 1,600 in 5:01. Allan Plueger won the 3,200 in 12:04.
