  • Trojan wrestlers win two...

     The West Brunswick High School wrestling team won its final two home matches of the season Jan. 22, beating New Hanover 58-24 and Ashley 51-23.

    West won although two starters failed to make weight. Coach Jimmy Caraway also was pleased that six seniors got a chance to be part of the matches on Senior Night.

  • Erick Hill signs with BCC

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick High School senior second baseman Erick Hill has signed a letter of intent to attend Brunswick Community College.

    Hill, a four-year starter for the Trojans, is the latest in a trend of area players to attend BCC, which last year qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series.

    “I thought it would be a good fit,” Hill said.

  • West has final home swim meet

    BOLIVIA — West Brunswick High School swim teams finished behind Hoggard and Topsail high schools in a three-team meet Saturday at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

    In the girls’ meet, Hoggard was first (126 points), Topsail second (87) and West third (15). In the boys’ meet, Hoggard was first (133.5), Topsail second (74.5) and West third (45).

    West’s only regional-qualifying times were in the 100-yard breaststroke, where freshman Tyler Bowersox finished second (1 minute, 12.02 seconds) and senior Elijah Pridgen finished third (1:13.95).

  • Trojans hold off Ashley rally,...

     SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team beat Ashley 72-66 in a Mideastern Conference game Friday, Jan. 17, at West.

    West improved to 4-2 in the conference, 11-4 overall, and remains in the running for its first conference title since 1989. Ashley dropped to 3-3, 6-10.

    West junior forward Gray Cheers scored 25 points, and hitting three 3-ponters in the fourth quarter to thwart an Ashley rally. Saadiq Johnson scored 11 points and O.J. Hill 10.

     BOLIVIA — South Brunswick won three relays in the girls’ meet — all in regional-qualifying times — as the Lady Cougars finished tied for first with Topsail in a high school swim meet Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center. The Pirates won the boys’ meet and Topsail’s teams finished first overall.

    In the 200-yard medley relay, Brinkley Farmer, Michelle Richards, Payton Drummonds and Lauren Johnson finished in 2 minutes, 11.23 seconds, tying for first with Topsail.

  • Lady Dolphins defeat No. 7 Cape...

     BOLIVIA — The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Cape Fear Community College 79-74 Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym. The loss was the first of the season for Cape Fear (11-1), who entered the game ranked No. 7 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll.
