  • West Brunswick loses in first...

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick lost 4-1 to South Johnston on May 13 in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A baseball state playoffs.

    South Johnston junior Joe Johnson struck out eight in the seven-inning game. He gave up six hits — two in the final inning — and walked four.

    Johnson also hit a home run to right field in the third inning, tying the score 1-1. The home run was his eighth of the year.

  • Allen has two hits, two RBIs on...

    Hunter Allen and Reid Love drove in three of East Carolina’s seven runs on Senior Night, May 12, lifting the Pirates to a 7-0 win against Elon in seven innings at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The game was called early because of inclement weather in the area.

    With the victory, the Pirates improve to 33-20. The Phoenix drop to 24-27. The victory pushed ECU’s home record to 24-12.

    Allen, a co-captain, led the Pirates’ seven-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. He has 15th multi-hit games this season.

  • BCC loses to PHCC, season ends


    The Brunswick Community College baseball season ended in a 9-5 loss May 12 to host Patrick Henry Community College in the NJCAA Division II Region 10 championship tournament in Martinsville, Va.

    BCC finished with 13 hits as Chase Gehringer and Dillon Stewart hit home runs, but PHCC also had 13 hits.

    PHCC scored three runs in the first inning against starter Patrick Corcoran. Gerhinger hit a two-run home run in the top of third, but PHCC also scored twice in the inning. A PHCC run in the fourth put it ahead 6-2.

  • Trojan golfers finish 11th in...


    The West Brunswick boys’ golf team finished 11th out of 12 teams in the NCHSAA Class 3A golf state tournament at Longleaf.

    Forestview High School won the team competition for the fourth straight  year.   Its  four players in two rounds shot a 585. West shot a 651.

  • West golfer Patterson 5-over par...

     West Brunswick’s Landon Patterson shot a 5-over-par 76 in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 3A golf state tournament May 11.

    He is tied for 25th in the two-day tourney at Longleaf. Six players shot a 75. The top score is 1-under par.

    Patterson was even-par on holes 1 through 9. He birdied the par-4, 395-yard first hole. He scored a bogey on the par-5, 525-yard fifth hole and scored a bogey on the par-4, 396-yard sixth hole. He scored a birdie on the par-3, 174-yard eighth hole.

     West Brunswick athletics director Jimmy Fletcher has set the times for the first round of the playoffs.

    The West Brunswick softball team will open the Class 3A state playoffs at home against Union Pines.

    West is seeded No. 11 and is 16-5. Union Pines is seeded No. 22 and is 8-11.

    North Brunswick (16-5) is seeded No. 6 in Class 2A and will open at home against No. 27 Southern Vance (8-8).

    Times, dates of games not yet set.

  • Lady Trojans open soccer...

       The West Brunswick girls’ soccer team will open the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs at Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.

    West, 8-9-3 and seeded No. 30, will play a team that is seeded No. 3 and is 21-1-0.

    The East bracket comprises 32 teams.

  • Flounder looking at stiff...

     We have just experienced our first tropical system of the year and it is only May. It is my hope the tropics will be much like last year, making this our one and only system that affects our area this year.
