  • Laney defeats Trojans 28-6 in...

    WILMINGTON — Laney beat West Brunswick 28-6 in the final football game of the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference for the Trojans.

    The loss dropped West to 2-4 in the conference, 5-6 overall. Laney is 3-2, 4-6.

    The loss also dropped West’s seeding for the state football playoffs. The official brackets are expected to be released Nov. 8. 

    Laney scored on its opening possession on a 34-yard run with 9 minutes, 56 seconds left in the quarter.

  • Topsail defeats Trojans 3-1 in...

    SHALLOTTE — Topsail defeated West Brunswick 3-1 in a Mideastern Conference boys’ soccer game Oct. 27 between class 3A teams at West Brunswick.

    The victory avenged a 2-1 loss Oct. 1. The two teams finished 3-9 in the conference. In a game for playoff seeding played Friday, Oct. 30, at Ashley High School, West lost 1-0 to the Pirates.

    In the game Oct. 27, Topsail scored first, about 10 minutes into the game.

    The Trojans tied the score about 40 seconds later on a goal by senior Tristan Murphy. Senior Porfirio Bautista had the assist.

  • Leo Jarmusz: Going strong at 96

    One of the best things about writing this column is the chance I get to meet some of the greatest people in the world. Not presidents or politicians, wealthy industrialists, movie stars or rock stars, mind you, but the wonderful salt-of-the-earth people that make this country great.

    One of these guys is Leo Jarmusz, who just turned 96, plays golf three times a week and has shot his age more times than he can count.

    I spent time with Jarmusz last week and let me tell you, he is the real deal.

  • West Carteret sweeps Trojans out...

    MOREHEAD CITY — West Carteret swept West Brunswick on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association class 3A volleyball state playoffs.

    The Patriots beat the Trojans 25-17, 25-19, 25-18. West Carteret, 18-2 and seeded No. 4 in the east section of the playoffs, advances to a second-round game Tuesday, Oct. 27. West Brunswick, seeded No. 29 out of 32 teams, finishes the season 9-11.

  • Hoggard defeats Trojans 30-13

    SHALLOTTE — Hoggard defeated West Brunswick 30-13 in the next-to-last conference football game of the season Friday, Oct. 23.

    The Vikings scored 23 points before halftime and led by 30 in the fourth quarter before the Trojans scored on long runs by junior backs Anthony McCray and Tariq Thomas.

    West is 2-3 in the Mideastern 3A/4A conference, 5-5 overall. Hoggard, a class 4A team, is 3-1, 5-4.
