  • Shock opens season with shutout

    The Brush Dental Shock returned to soccer action, adding three new players to its roster. Madeline Jackson, Grace Nance and Robin Wood joined the Shock to help continue its winning ways in the Pleasure Island Soccer League.
    On Saturday, the Shock opened its new season with a 3-0 shutout over a Wilmington opponent. Caroline Hawthorne led the team with two goals. Kayla Crouch also scored and played one half as a goalkeeper.
    The Shock used a strong defense, led by Amity Croft and Leah McDonald, to keep the ball on the offensive side of the field most of the game.

  • Myrtle Beach 400 is set for...

    Racing resumes Friday at  Myrtle Beach Speedway with many new events and special events. This will be the 55th year for the racetrack, which has seen the greats of racing compete at the 0.538-mile asphalt facility.
    On Friday, the postponed Myrtle Beach 400, running under the NASCAR Late Model rules, and the South East Limited 100 Pro division will see the green flag  This is the make-up event from rain-delayed Myrtle Beach 400 in November.

    Tourney April 1 is for Relay for Life
    Town Creek Elementary School is sponsoring a golf tourney April 20 at Magnolia Greens and the proceeds benefit Relay for Life. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. The fee is $60 per golfer, $240 per team, and covers lunch. To register, call Stella Tucker at (910) 253-6500 or email stucker@bcswan.net by April 1.

  • Trojans’ Patterson wins golf...

    Staff Report

    West Brunswick freshman Landon Patterson was the only golfer to break 80 as he won the season-opening high school golf tourney March 11 at Whiteville Country Club.
    Patterson shot a 79 on the par-72, 6,329-yard course.
    Other scorers for West: sophomore Drew Boyer, 83; senior Holt Durham, 85; sophomore Dylan Howard, 85; sophomore Cole Snyder, 86; and junior Zack Flaccavento, 88.

  • Ocean Ridge Hotop Scramble

    The Ocean Ridge Men’s Golf League played its annual two-day scramble tournament March 11 at Lion’s Paw and March 13 at Panther’s Run. The tournament was named The Hotop Scramble in honor of Bill Hotop, who died last year. This was Hotop’s favorite tournament. Diana Hotop awarded all the prizes to the winning teams.

    The Beachcombers played a three-nets tournament Friday at Eastport. The winners with a score of 186 (-24) were Ed Nocella, Bob Smith, Bob Brownley and Dennis McCann. In second were Sid Silvers, Bob Byrne, Jim Beairsto and Jim Ritter at 187 (-23). Gross: Sid Silvers, 81; Stu Cleveland, 84; and Jim Ritter, 88. Net: Ed Nocella, 59; Stu Cleveland, 60; Jim Ritter, 63; Ed Redman, 64; Sid Silver and Bob Cecil, 66; Jim Beairsto and Bob Brownley, 68; and Larry Cecil, 69. Ed Nocella is golfer of the week.

  • Gatlinburg, Oh, Gatlinburg

    Gene and I have the best of all worlds. We live in Brunswick County on the Carolina Coast (temperate year-round climate, lots of golf courses, fabulous beaches, great seafood, boating, fishing, plus Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wilmington are a short drive away).
    Yet, we have another alternative world we visit several times a year. That world exists in Gatlinburg, Tenn., at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains.

  • Junior Open tennis tourney this...

    On Saturday and Sunday, the Brunswick County Junior Open tennis tournament will take place at the Ocean Isle Beach Park tennis courts. The tennis starts at 8:30 a.m. each day. This is a USTA-sanctioned event with a 16-draw limit. There will be boys’ and girls’ divisions for ages up to 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Players must be USTA members.
