  • North Brunswick wrestler Burton...

     GREENSBORO — North Brunswick sophomore Patrick Burton finished second in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 2A wrestling state championships Saturday, Feb. 21.

    Dixon senior Kevin Cagle (32-6) beat Burton (48-7) in a tiebreaker.

    At 145 pounds, Burton opened with a 5-0 victory against junior Reuben Santiago (36-12). Burton then wrestled Wilkes Central senior Cole Susi (48-5) and won 8-0. In a semifinal against junior Trenton Davis (33-12), Burton won 14-2.

    The first round of the boys’ basketball state playoffs, West Craven at West Brunswick, has been postponed until 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. 

    The cost is $6.

     

    NCHSAA REGIONAL BASKETBALL SCHEDULE LISTED

    The schedule has been announced for next week’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association regional basketball tournaments, set to be played in Fayetteville and Winston-Salem.

    West Brunswick reached the final of the Farm Bureau Mideastern Conference championship tourney by beating New Hanover 49-48 Thursday, Feb. 19.

    The Trojans will play Hoggard in a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at BCC. West and Hoggard finished the regular season as conference co-champions.

    Against New Hanover, Gray Cheers scored 18 points and Saadiq Johnson 11. Alex Clarida scored seven points, Tyqaun Hill six, Tyler Stanley three and Jon Jordan four.

    The winter weather has yet to vacate our area. Last Sunday, Feb. 8, we experienced a brief showing of spring weather with temperatures in the high 60s. Most anglers took this as an opportunity to wet a line and that spring was right around the corner.

    Boy, were we wrong.

    Thick jackets quickly replaced T-shirts and shorts when winter storm Octavia showed up. It seems as if the wind and the cold will never end.

    Each year, I make a bunch of New Year’s resolutions and by March I’ve forgotten them all. Losing weight, getting fit, lowering my golf handicap, creating delicious gourmet meals for Gene, reading more books, writing more books … the list goes on and on and as the days go by I slowly lose my resolve.

    This year is different and I’m delighted. I vowed to get fitter and to get my golf scores down — and so far, it’s working.

    Chad McCumbee will join with 2012 Playboy MX-5 Cup Champion Stevan McAleer to create a new racing team set to take on the 2015 MX-5 Cup. 

    The new team will be named McCumbee McAleer Racing (MMR). Representing their partner, they will compete in the Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship as ModSpace Motorsports.

  • Shaw wins 300th at BCC

    BOLIVIA — Walter Shaw won the 300th game of his coaching career Sunday, Feb. 15, when Brunswick Community College defeated Denmark Tech 111-91 in a men’s basketball game.

    “It’s a blessing to be able to stay here long enough to make it happen,” said Shaw, now in his 15th season as BCC coach. “A blessing to have players that allow this to happen. It’s the ultimate testament to loyalty, longevity and success.”

  • 11 county wrestlers qualify for...

     

    Eleven county wrestlers have qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships.

    Two of the wrestlers are unbeaten and three enter as regional champions.

    Four North Brunswick wrestlers qualified Saturday, Feb. 14, from the Class 2A Mideast Regional at Croatan High School.

    North senior Evin Bellamy won the 195-pound title against Isaiah Bookman, beating him 12-5. Bellamy is 37-0. Bookman is 30-3.
