SOUTHPORT — West Brunswick High School senior golfer Zack Flaccavento scored a hole-in-one Monday, March 24, during a Mideastern 4A/3A Conference tournament.

In sunny but chilly weather, Flaccavento aced the 173-yard fifth hole of the Founders Club at St. James Plantation. He used a 5-iron.

“I hit a nice, little fade,” he said. “We didn’t see it go into the hole but I heard it hit the stick. I was really hoping it didn’t hit the stick and ricochet off. I walked up there, and it was in the bottom of the cup.”

Over the years, Golf Gab has featured various pros, golf course superintendents, instructors, club managers and golf course designers.

Each fall, we run several articles about our men’s and women’s club champions in conjunction with the annual Brunswick Beacon Tournament of Champions.

Last week I had a brainstorm: Wouldn’t it be fun to write about some of our local golfers, our amateurs, who live and play the game in Brunswick County?

  • Lady Trojans beat South Columbus...

SHALLOTTE—Leilani Emile blasted a stinger to left field to end a three-hour, 11-inning softball marathon and give West Brunswick a 2-1 win over South Columbus on Thursday night, March 13.

“She put it down the third-base line,” West softball coach Joe Noble said. “It was a great hit.”

A shivering crowd, huddled under blankets in the bleachers, erupted in cheers. Temperatures were in the 30s, and a wicked wind made it even colder.
