    What in the world can a fisherman write about in this kind of weather? The possibility of a nasty winter storm just squeaked by our coastline last weekend. Several areas north of us recorded the second worst snow storm in their history. I expect we will see a few more opportunities for a nasty winter storm along our coastline before April. The good news is that the forecast for Feb. 1 shows highs in the mid-60s. Those kinds of temperatures just might put a few people on the water. What can you expect to encounter out there?

    BOLIVIA — The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Catawba Valley Community College 58-53 in a Region 10 game Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    BCC, which lost the previous day 90-52 at No. 14 Cape Fear Community College, is 4-2, 10-6. CVCC is 2-5, 7-8.

    Briana Baham scored 33 points for the Dolphins. She scored 13 of BCC’s final 17 points.

    A.J. Mays scored 14 points. Jasmine Dixon scored eight points, all in the first half. Daisha Jordan scored three points.

    BOLIVIA — South Brunswick’s teams won the final regular season swim meet of the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center pool.

    In the three-team girls’ meet, South won the final event and scored enough points to beat New Hanover 103-101. West scored 20 points.

    In the boys’ meet, South also scored 103 points. New Hanover scored 61 and West 59.

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat South Brunswick 59-48 in a Mideastern 3A/4A Conference girls’ basketball game Jan. 20 at West.

    Each team entered the game winless in the conference. South had one senior on its roster; West, none.

    For West (1-4, 7-8 overall) freshman Breanna Mercer scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds. Sophomore Natyra Gore scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made five steals.

    LELAND — Two North Brunswick baseball players were honored during the 12th annual Leland Hot Stove League banquet Saturday, Jan. 16, at North Brunswick High School.

    Garrett Scoggins was awarded the Nelson Best Scholarship. He is studying engineering at N.C. State University and has a 3.9 GPA. He also is on N.C. State’s club baseball team.

    Scoggins was a member of the Brunswick County team that won the Dixie Boys World Series in 2011. He was a four-year letterman for the North Brunswick Scorpions.
