SHALLOTTE – The North Myrtle Beach High School (S.C) varsity football team entered Monday night’s contest against Shallotte as the No. 3 ranked team in Class 4A football in the Palmetto State.

The Chiefs justified that ranking and then some with a 38-12 victory Monday, Sept. 4, over the West Brunswick Trojans at M.H. Rourk Stadium.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 1, but West athletic director Jimmy Fletcher moved the game to Thursday, Sept. 1, due to a bad weather forecast on Friday.

  • Living in a fantasy world

Perhaps the only thing I enjoy more than football is fantasy football.

That’s right. Three drafts are in the books for the 2017-18 season and here’s hoping I’ll be laying claim to at least a couple of championship trophies by the time Christmas rolls around.

I’m going to break down my rosters for our readers and I’d appreciate constructive feedback. Tell me what you think by emailing shickman@brunswickbeacon.com.

  • West volleyball knocks off...

The West Brunswick High School varsity volleyball team lost its first four games of the 2017 season and had won only one of 13 sets before a conference match Aug. 29 at Topsail.

The Trojans pushed their way into the win column in their first Mideastern 3A/4A Conference contest of the season with a 25-19, 13-25, 25-11, 28-26 victory over the Pirates last week in Hampstead.

Senior setter Payton Roberts led the Trojans (1-6, 1-1) with 16 assists, six aces, a pair of blocks and three kills in the victory.

Reed and Mokma finished second and third, respectively, in the boys’ meet as West Brunswick posted an impressive 38 points to finish in second place in last week’s four-team meet.

The Trojans finished just 15 points behind the meet champion, Hoggard.

  • Remembering our fallen heroes...

Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer and a day often regarded as one of rest and a time to party. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor associations and their contributions to the U.S. economy. The first Labor Day was held in 1882 when parades were intended to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations.
