  • North Myrtle Beach defeats...

    SHALLOTTE — North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School beat West Brunswick 34-7 in a non-conference football game Friday, Sept. 4 at West.

    The loss was the first of the season for West (2-1). North Myrtle Beach is 2-1 and has scored at least 27 points in each of the three games.

    Junior quarterback Ronnie Bass completed nine of 14 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns for the Chiefs. North Myrtle Beach scored on five of its 10 possessions. One of the other possessions ended on a missed field goal. Another possession ended on downs at the West 5.

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Willie Fulford won the Mini Stocks championship Sept. 3 at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    The Fulford family was the dominant name in the division this season as brothers Willie and Adam chased the season title. Willie Fulford, who had won four races, had a 13-point lead entering the final race over Adam Fulford, who had won three races.

    In the 20-lap race Sept. 3, Willie Fulford led the early laps but brother Adam took the lead about midway through the race on the way to the victory.

  • Trojans beat Whiteville 7-0 in...

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick boys’ soccer team beat Whiteville 7-0 in a non-conference game Sept. 2.

    Senior midfielder Tristan Murphy scored three goals and sophomore forward Lincoln Smith two. Senior midfielder John McNeil and freshman forward Alex Younts also scored. Senior midfielder Noah Faircloth had two assists. Senior Michael Nelson was the goalkeeper as the Trojans improved to 3-2.

    McNeil scored West’s first goal with 9 minutes, 48 seconds left in the first half when he headed a 30-yard free kick from Sam Zeng.

    The West Brunswick volleyball team began its conference season this week, beating Ashley but losing to Hoggard.

    West Brunswick defeated Ashley 25-23, 25-23, 27-25 Sept. 1 in Wilmington.

    Hannah Pugh had 11 kills, 18 digs and five service aces.

    Haley Long had 15 digs.

    Payton Roberts had 12 assists.

    The Ashley JV beat West 2-0.

    In a match Sept. 2 at West, Hoggard rallied to beat the Trojans 22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-5.

    Pugh led team in kills (18), digs (27) and service aces (three).

  • WBHS football player of week

    Nate Gilbert is the Shallotte Farm Bureau Insurance West Brunswick football player of the week for the first game of the season. Gilbert is a senior defensive lineman. In West’s victory Aug. 21 against Socastee (S.C.) High School, Gilbert intercepted a pass and forced a fumble. Next to him are agency manager Rodney Brown and West head football coach Kelly Williamson.

  • Defense leads West to victory...

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat South Columbus 20-13 in a non-conference football game Friday, Aug. 28, and improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

    “I’m proud for fans, the school and the community,” said Kelly Williamson, who is in his first year as Trojan coach.

    “For me, it’s let’s get better. We didn’t play very well tonight.”

    Despite one blocked PAT, one interception, four fumbles and nine penalties — including unsportsmanlike conduct — the Trojans prevailed.

  • McCumbee-McAleer driver wins race

    Danny Bender, racing for McCumbee-McAleer Racing, scored his first career Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup victory Saturday, Aug. 29.

    Bender won at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. En route to the win, Bender also was the Battery Tender Hard Charger, improving 12 positions.

    This was the second victory of the season for McCumbee-McAleer Racing, based in Supply. McCumbee, as a substitute driver, won the other race.
