  • West golfer Patterson wins...

     Staff Report

    West Brunswick junior Landon Patterson shot an even-par 72 in winning the Mideastern Conference golf tournament  April 20 at Pine Valley. The course layout was 6,418 yards.

    In the team competition, Laney was first (321) and West second (323).

    For West, senior Drew Boyer shot an 81, sophomore Tucker Vaughan an 81 and senior Cole

    Snyder an 89.

    South Brunswick was sixth (389) in the seven-team tourney. Xavier Williams shot an 83.

  • Shot put titlist Derrick Wheeler...

     LELAND — Coach Garry Bishop stood next to the table where North Brunswick senior Derrick Wheeler was seated and spoke about the traits that have made Wheeler a three-time state champion in the shot put.

    In North’s gym April 15 before many students and with family present, Wheeler was about to sign a letter of intent to attend N.C. A&T State University. Before Wheeler signed, Bishop read from two pages of notes about why Wheeler has succeeded. Among the traits: coachable, respectful, likable, dedicated.

  • Cook, St. Andrews finish regular...

    Kim Cook pitched St. Andrews to a 2-0 victory as it swept its final two games of the softball season against conference foe Truett-McConnell College (Ga.) April 13 in Laurinburg.

    With the victories, SAU finished fifth and 12-8 in the AAC. The 12 victories are SAU’s most conference victories since the 2004 team also had 12 (but in Division II).

  • Sloup receives Big South golf...

     Winthrop senior Jennifer Dilger and freshman Ashley Sloup have been voted to receive Big South Conference women's golf awards at the 2015 Big South Championship tournament in Georgetown, S.C.

    Sloup, a South Brunswick graduate, was voted to the All-Freshman team after averaging 78.74 strokes in 19 rounds. She had two top-10 finishes and four top-20 finishes in Winthrop’s eight tournaments.

  • BCC scores in ninth, beats SCC 4...

     

    BOLIVIA — Chase Gehringer reached on a fielder’s choice and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Brunswick Community College beat Surry Community College 4-3 Saturday, April 11, at Founders Field.

    BCC entered the weekend 7-2 in NJCAA Division II Region 10 and tied for first with Catawba Valley. The Dolphins are 27-10 overall.

    SCC entered the weekend next to last at 2-7. It is 8-20 overall.

  • West Brunswick beats North, wins...

     

    SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 9-0 and won the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational on Wednesday, April 8, on Mike Alderson Field.

    Trojan senior pitcher Cameron Lewis gave up six hits in the shutout. He struck out five and walked none as he improved to 5-0 this season.

    “He’s a pitch-to-contact guy, which is what we preach,” West coach T.J. Spivey said. “For him to be successful, our defense has to make plays.

  • Trojans lose to Cougars in...

     SHALLOTTE — South Brunswick beat West Brunswick 10-8 Thursday, April 2, in the first girls’ lacrosse game between the two teams.

    Ana Poulin scored West’s only goal in the first half, which ended with South ahead 4-1. The Cougars led 6-1 with 19 minutes left when West rallied, cutting the lead to 6-5 in 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

    “I was so proud of the girls,” West coach Kate Gentle said. “They played a phenomenal second half. They came back to almost win the game.”

  • Trojans score twice in seventh,...

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat South Brunswick 3-2 in a conference baseball game Thursday, April 2, at Mike Alderson field.

    West trailed 2-1 in the seventh. Tyler McDuffie led off with a single. Austin Turner reached on an error. With one out, Charlie Carcich singled, driving in the tying run.

    After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Cameron Davis’ grounder scored the winning run.

    The victory completed a season sweep of the Cougars.

    Chris Graham runs to victory in 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash April 1 at the county Olympics. Cameron Barnhill is second (11.3) and Allen Frye third (11.4).

  • South’s girls, North’s boys win...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES — South Brunswick’s girls and North Brunswick’s boys won the annual county track and field meet April 1 at South.

    In the boys’ meet, North won 14 events and scored 114.5 points. South won four events and scored 46.5 points. West scored 25 points.

    For North, Jayhlen Washington won three individual events. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.9 seconds. Evin Bellamy was second (15.6) and Keandre Yeoman third (15.7), all in regional times.
