  • Lovin’ Litchfield Beach and Golf...

The Carolina coast is an awesome area. Near Virginia, we have the Outer Banks, 200 miles of barrier islands with lots of great beaches, history (the Wright Brothers flew their first airplane in Kitty Hawk) and golf courses.

Coming down the coast, we have Cape Fear, our very own Brunswick Islands and then the huge sprawling Myrtle Beach, S.C., complex with more than 100 golf courses, lots of shows, amusements, shopping and fabulous beaches.

  • Jersey Girls: Golf and fun for...

I heard about the Jersey Girls through mutual friends and became intrigued.

A group of gals from New Jersey has been coming to Brunswick County each fall for 20 years. They stay in the same house for a week. They play golf, shop, and eat in, taking turns cooking and cleaning up.

  • Festival ends, but keep on...

The North Carolina Oyster Festival was this past weekend at Ocean Isle Beach. The Oyster Festival is the last big event that brings a crowd to our beach. The beach-going foot traffic will steadily decline from this point. The waterways have been quiet throughout the week, but the weekends have been super busy. The weather finally is making a turn to fall conditions with cool nights and north winds. The bull redfish run should continue for at least another week and then the speckled trout bite should be active.

  • Fishing for king mackerel at its...

The king mackerel fishing has been on fire this past week. Therefore, for those of you fishermen carving pumpkins, go ahead and slowly put down the knife and get the boat ready — the fish are biting. The kings have made their presence known by moving into the shallower waters of the Cape Fear shipping channel. In addition to being closer to the beach, this area is well known for producing big fish this time of year. Fishermen that fish the right time, tide and place can have one of their best king mackerel days of the year.

  • Veterans’ Golf Tournament: An...

Last week I had the privilege of attending the closing ceremonies for the Veterans Tournament at Brick Landing Plantation. The tournament was played Oct. 8, and was for the benefit of the new Veterans’ Memorial in Sunset Beach.

The day was amazing on several levels. First of all, more than $20,000 was raised for the memorial in a single day. Secondly, the tournament was filled to capacity several weeks in advance. Best of all, everyone finished golfing in fewer than 4½ hours. Our military men and women know how to keep on a schedule.

  • Top two teams in Fall Brawl each...

Clearly Hooked, captained by Austin T. Eubank of Carolina Beach, hooked a 39.65-pound king mackerel Saturday, Oct. 11, and won the Fall Brawl King Classic last weekend.

The crew won $19,306 for its first-place finish and its high finishes in other categories.

The Ocean Isle Fishing Center ran the tournament Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct 12. The tourney attracted 195 entries, and 130 boats fished Saturday.
