    LELAND — Two North Brunswick baseball players were honored during the 12th annual Leland Hot Stove League banquet Saturday, Jan. 16, at North Brunswick High School.

    Garrett Scoggins was awarded the Nelson Best Scholarship. He is studying engineering at N.C. State University and has a 3.9 GPA. He also is on N.C. State’s club baseball team.

    Scoggins was a member of the Brunswick County team that won the Dixie Boys World Series in 2011. He was a four-year letterman for the North Brunswick Scorpions.

    Courtney Turner scored a career-high 9.825 on the uneven bars in helping the North Carolina State University gymnastics team beat Penn State 194.700-194.125 Jan. 9 University Park, Pa., in N.C. State’s first meet of the season.

    The Nittany Lions were ranked 17th in the NCAA Preseason Poll and N.C. State 27th. This is the first time the Wolfpack has won at Penn State.

    The Pack had individual wins in beam, floor and all-around competition. Turner, a West Brunswick graduate, tied for third in the uneven bars, one of seven top-three finishes for N.C. State.

  • Trojan wrestlers beat New Hanover

    SHALLOTTE — The West Brunswick wrestling team competed in its last home match of the season Friday, Jan. 17, beating New Hanover 81-0 in a conference match.

    The Trojans won seven matches by forfeit, six by fall and one by technical fall.

    West is 4-1 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference. The Trojans’ final conference match is Jan. 26 at Hoggard. The conference tourney is Jan. 30 at Ashley High School.

    Against New Hanover, junior Caleb Smith (106 pounds) won by fall in 59 seconds against junior William Daniel.

  • BCC men open Region 10 season...

    BOLIVIA — Brunswick Community College beat USC Salkehatchie 74-70 a Region 10 men’s basketball opener Jan. 13 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    Dominic Page scored 23 points for the Dolphins, who improved to 11-8.

    Lysander Bracey, whose two free throws with 24.2 seconds left helped clinch the victory, scored 19 points.

    Other BCC scorers: Jahreim Smith and Josh Thompson two, Eric Freeman four, Saleik Edwards and Britton Reed five, Alex Brown six and Parker Helgerson eight.
