  • Scores, highlights of area golf...

On Aug. 1 at Farmstead, Joe Meo, John Methvin, Bob Jaeger and a draw placed first with a 144. Format for the day was cha-cha-cha. In second was the team of Sid Pennington, Steve Maiorca, Cliff Musselman and Joe Gallo.

  • In the heat of the day, target...

Right now the fish being targeted the most by Brunswick County inshore anglers is the flounder. That is because during the heat of summer, flounder can often be caught during the day, unlike many fish such as speckled trout or redfish, which stage more of a morning or nighttime bite, if they bite at all.

  • Slow play in the summer: Move it

This has been a brutal summer thus far and it’s not over yet.

Many of us are so crazy or committed (that’s probably the operative word, as in need to be committed) that we still play golf when the temperature climbs into the 90s.

  • Brunswick Batting Center opens...

After years of thought, Mike Alderson and Brian Alderson have opened the Brunswick Batting Center on Red Bug Road, just off Highway 17.

“I’ve had a business plan for this since 2003,” said Mike Alderson, who has coached the West Brunswick baseball team to 311 victories and a state championship in 2004. “We talked about it every year. B.A. got me excited about it again. So B.A. and I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

  • Local surfer Knox Harris...

Knox Harris, an Ocean Isle surfer who learned the trade from his dad, is having success in the pro-am division.

Harris, 16, recently competed and won the Wrightsville Beach Reef Pro-Am competition July 16 at Wrightsville Beach.

Harris’ parents, Sarah, a local realtor, and Ray, who owns Sharky’s restaurant in Ocean Isle Beach, have allowed Knox to move to Wrightsville Beach, where the waves are better and he can practice every day.

  • Brunswick County wins Dixie Boys...

BEAUFORT, S.C.—The Brunswick County Dixie Boys baseball team played team baseball in defeating the Bossier City team from Louisiana 17-7 Wednesday night and winning the Dixie Boys World Series.

The game, which was scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, was delayed after a sudden deluge that flooded the field around 4 p.m. The heavy rain continued until about 4:30 p.m. and local officials stated the game would be played sometime between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., but the game would be played. Twelve workers got the field in decent shape.

  • Tour trip mixes fishing,...

I spent the most of last week doing nothing but fishing with the folks in Brunswick County, riding surf to pier and jumping from boat to boat with old friends and new. I barely slept but it was well worth it.
