  • Whiting an important fish for...

    The piers are opening in the Carolinas, and bottom fishermen are ready to fill their coolers. The fishing season usually takes a little while to start, especially ocean-side. One fish that often shows up early is the whiting. A dependable pier and surf catch, and a tasty dish, whiting are the bread and butter of our local piers until the spot decide to make an appearance.

  • Golf action

    The governing club of this year’s season of the Brunswick Ladybirds is Brunswick Plantation. The officers are Sue Sadlon, president; Carrie Wilson, vice president/treasurer and Laura Lagenaur, secretary.

    The first tournament, which officially kicked off the season, was played March 11 at Oak Island. Following are the results:

  • One avid golfer's look back...

    If you’ve played golf as long as I have, you can look back at all the crazy things that happened on the course and laugh.

    A dog darts out of the woods, grabs a ball off the green and disappears into the trees. A fabulously long drive rolls toward the pond and nestles against a sleeping gator.

  • Seven West track athletes make...

    Seven West Brunswick track and field athletes have had strong performances in the first few meets of the season. Many of the events are warm-ups for the season-ending conference meet April 28-30, but the events also are a chance for athletes to qualify for the Class AAA East Regional May 9 at Swansboro High School. The top-four finishers in each event advance to the state championships, May 16.

    For West, Bradley Bell had qualified for the regional in three sprints and Josh Johnson in two sprints. Marc Cajuste has qualified in the 100 meters.

  • Leland lacrosse player signs...

    Next spring Garrett Swaim will be part of the first lacrosse team at Jacksonville University. The Leland resident hopes he and his teammates can start a proud legacy.

    “I thought it would be really cool to be part of the first-ever recruiting class for them,” he said.

    Swaim is the son of Brenda and Lindian Joseph Swaim (a physician at Brunswick Community Hospital). Garrett is believed to be the first Brunswick County youth to sign a Division I scholarship to play lacrosse.

  • Wally Kamfolt, West slam North...

    LELAND—Wally Kamfolt hit a grand slam as West Brunswick beat North Brunswick 11-3 in a nonconference baseball game March 10.

    Kamfolt finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a grand slam and five RBIs. Jay Gause also homered in West’s last game before the conference season began.

    Two other Trojans had multiple hits: Blain Turner, the No. 9 hitter, singled and doubled in four at-bats and catcher Josh Powell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. He also threw a runner trying to steal second base in the first inning.

  • West sweeps North, South; now 5-0

    LELAND—The West Brunswick girls’ softball team needed just one inning to score four runs as it defeated rival North 6-1 March 10.

    Stacy Jackson started things for West with a walk and promptly stole second. The speedy Jackson continued running all the way home on an overthrow and West had a 1-0 lead.

  • Season creates memories

    Some thoughts about the basketball and wrestling seasons:

    Most entertaining team: A young North Brunswick girls’ basketball team showed it has the talent to be dominating, but lack of consistency for what essentially was a junior varsity was the key factor in many of its losses. The Scorpions reached the second round of state playoffs. They should be fun to watch next season.

  • West starts season 3-0

    After the West Brunswick High School softball team improved to 3-0 by beating South Columbus 14-4 Monday afternoon, West coach Joe Noble succinctly assessed his team:

    “Right now, when you’re hitting the ball the way we are and scoring as many runs as we’re scoring—and Carly (White) is pitching the way she is pitching—it’s kind of hard to lose.”

  • West Brunswick's Trojans...

    The West Brunswick baseball team played county rivals North Brunswick and South Brunswick as it opened the 2009 high school baseball season.

    West lost 5-2 to North on March 4 but on Friday West beat South 9-2.

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—West scored its first two runs in the top of the second inning. Nick Napolitano reached base on an error and Blain Turner singled. After a successful double steal, an overthrow and a single by Brock Holmes, West led 2-0.
