Each year the Carolinas Section of the PGA hosts a Merchandise Show at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. I always go to check out what’s new in the world of golf.

This year, I zeroed in on three booths. Two were startup clothing businesses and one was promoting one of the oldest courses in the world: the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews, host of this year’s British Open.

Brandon Rankin is getting as much attention for his football skills in the West as he did in the Southeast.

Rankin, the conference defensive player of the year his senior year at West Brunswick High School, has played the last two years at Butte Junior College in California, where he excelled. On Feb. 4 he signed a letter of intent to finish his college football career at Washington State University.

The West Brunswick High School girls basketball team lost it next-last conference game 44-28 Friday to Jacksonville.

The Lady Trojans and Jacksonville were tied 5-5 after the first quarter. A basket by the Trojans’ Jasmine Jackson just before the halftime buzzer left them down 14-10. Jacksonville then outscored West 14-11 in the third quarter for a 28-21 lead.

A 3-pointer by West’s Sheena Suttlemyre cut the Cardinal lead to 30-24 with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left. A basket and a free throw gave Jacksonville a 33-24 lead with 4:59 left.

BOILING SPRING LAKES—South Brunswick won its ninth straight conference basketball game by beating North Brunswick 43-36 Friday night.

Center Reggie Cobia’s ankle injury has healed and he outjumped South’s Joey Hines for the tip-off this week by a good 6 inches, and North was in total control of the game early. The Scorpions hit the boards harder and ran and passed, while the Cougars looked tired and could not find the basket. Cobia was everywhere on defense, rebounding and scoring (eight points).
