  • South beats West in three sets...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES—South Brunswick beat West Brunswick in three straight sets in a conference volleyball match between two Class 3A teams Sept. 20.

    The Cougars won 25-13, 25-22, 25-20 as West lost for the first time this season in the conference (5-1, 9-4 overall).

    South dominated the first set from the start, taking a 5-0 lead on Madison Walker’s serves. Heather Hinson held serve for three points as the Cougars increased the lead to 10-1.

  • White, Nolan had big weeks for...

    Mount Olive College sophomore Carly White (Ash, N.C./West Brunswick HS) came up big for the Trojans last week, helping the squad open Conference Carolinas play with a win over St. Andrews.

    White delivered a match-high 10 kills for Mount Olive, including seven in the first set. Fellow sophomore Keri Nolan (Calabash, N.C./West Brunswick HS) added three kills during a 6-0 run that helped ice the final set.

  • Trojans shut out West Bladen 3-0

     

    The West Brunswick High School boys’ soccer team improved to 3-0 in the conference by beating West Bladen 3-0 Monday night. Senior midfielder Nick Carozza had an assist and scored twice.

    West controlled play for most of the first half, but its best shot on goal came 15 minutes after the start. Carozza passed to sophomore midfielder Luis Espinoza, who lined a shot that hit the bottom of the right post and bounced out of bounds.

  • Trojans improve to 5-0 in...

    The West Brunswick High School volleyball team improved to 5-0 in the conference by beating South Columbus 25-23, 25-11, 25-14 Sept. 15 at West. West is 9-3 overall.

    The first set was tied 19-19 before the Trojans got a sideout on a kill by Jasmine Jackson off a set by Alex Wickel. Another kill by Jackson and a service winner by Wickel put West ahead 23-19. The Stallions got a sideout and another point before an errant serve put West ahead 23-22. Mary Morgan Inions hit a service winner and after a sideout West won on a kill by Jackson off a set by Wickel.

  • With shuffled lineup, West beats...

     LELAND—With a new defensive backfield and a new starting forward, the West Brunswick High School soccer team beat North Brunswick 4-1 in a conference game Sept 14.

    Sophomore Luis Espinoza, a substitute for injured senior co-captain Alex Harrell, scored two goals in the first half.

    Junior forward Scottie Melvin also scored in the first half and Nick Carozza had two assists. Junior Jonathan Newhouse scored West’s goal in the second half, about a minute after North’s Carlos Mateos had cut the lead to 3-1.

  • McCumbee delivers another top-10...

    Neither a misfiring ignition box nor the surrounding mayhem could keep Chad McCumbee from delivering ModSpace and Andy Belmont Racing (ABR) from another impressive top-10 finish Sept. 5 in the Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
    The driver of the No. 1 ModSpace Ford Fusion was forced to give up his ninth-place starting spot when the team decided to change the ignition box as a precautionary measure before the 100-lap race for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.

  • Stay well for life

    There are so many different ways to stay healthy for life. The First Tee has encompassed life skills for eagle level participants that reach outside of the arena of golf. One of which is staying healthy for life.
    This is important to me as I work to become a better basketball player and golfer as well as stay fit and healthy. I have always enjoyed eating healthy and working out.

    The Beachcombers played a Stableford tournament Friday at Carolina Shores. The winners with a score of 22.5 points were Dan O’Connell, Bill Cameron and Ed Hennessey. In second with 13 points were Gary Gutheil, Paul Michal, Bob Smith and Jack Goin.

  • A retrospective of Sept. 11, 2001

    My family had an intimate knowledge of the World Trade Center in the years before 9-11. My husband’s firm, Deloitte & Touche (then Deloitte, Haskins & Sells), took up five floors of the North Tower starting in 1980.
    We have many happy memories of the World Trade Center: dinners at Windows on the World Restaurant; the whooshing express elevator that brought you from the lobby to the 110th floor in a matter of seconds; the views of Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, New Jersey, the Hudson River, the Battery and the Statue of Liberty.
