The news last week in high school football was Gordon Walters’ resignation at South Brunswick to become the football coach at White Knoll in South Carolina.

The bigger news for Walters came a day later, Feb. 19, when wife Stephanie gave birth to daughter Avery Sloane Walters.

“Eight pounds, 12 ounces,” Walters said. “21 inches long.”

It’s hardly surprising for a football coach to remember measurements, but at South, Walters succeeded because he blended football strategy with a family atmosphere.

Maybe now Cedric Simmons will get more time on the court.

Simmons was involved in a six-player trade Feb. 18 between the Chicago Bulls and the Sacramento Kings.

The Bulls sent Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden, Michael Ruffin and Simmons to the Kings for Brad Miller and John Salmons. As part of the deal, the Kings traded Ruffin to the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Ike Diogu and cash.

The trade apparently was a fast-breaking one. According to ESPN.com, Bulls players were pulled off the team bus that afternoon and told they had been traded.

BOILING SPRING LAKES—Announcer and scorekeeper John Walls hit the buzzer to start this first-round game Monday night in the Class AA state basketball playoffs between South Brunswick and Jacksonville Northside, and Northside controlled the tip-off and the game for all but 2.8 seconds. Ervin Hall drained a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to help push South past the Monarchs 55-54 and into the second round.

South coach Dan McGougan had drawn up the play with 12 seconds left as he took his last timeout.

WINSTON-SALEM—Six other Brunswick County wrestlers competed in the state wrestling tournament over the weekend, and the top finisher was South Brunswick junior Jeromy Roundtree.

Roundtree reached the title match at 119 pounds before losing 7-2 to Cardinal Gibbons freshman Matt Williams 7-2.

Roundtree began the tourney by beating Bandys sophomore Thomas Lunsford 3-2. Roundtree then beat defending state champion Dakota Holt 12-10. Roundtree advanced to the title match by beating Brevard senior Eric Evanger 8-1.

Roundtree ends the season 36-3.
