  • West sophomore Dee-termined to...

    WINSTON-SALEM—A top-four finish at the state wrestling championships seemed unlikely for West Brunswick heavyweight Dee Kent.

    Of the 16 finalists at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state tournament last weekend, he was one of three sophomores.

    Of the 16 finalists, he had the fewest victories (20) and the second-fewest matches (24).

    But Kent surprised many by reaching the consolation finals, where he finished fourth in the 285-pound class.

  • Fishermen can survive difficult...

    We live in difficult economic times, and sports enthusiasts are certainly not immune to the effects of our nation’s current recession. From the up and down (and up again) price of gas to the fact most of us have far less money to spend on tackle, folks into fishing have felt the pinch on their favorite hobby along with all the other aspects of their lives.

    Therefore it was with great cheer we greeted some unexpected good news last week, as the sea-lovers among us learned one encouraging thing has come from the troubled circumstances surrounding our monetary crisis.

  • Carolinas PGA: Growing the game

    When I was at the PGA Trade Show in Myrtle Beach last week, everyone was buzzing about the new initiatives the PGA is taking to grow the game of golf. The three big deals now are “Play Golf America,” the “League Play Championship” and “Get Golf Ready in Five Days for $99.”

    According to Ron Schmid, executive director of the Carolinas PGA, “These three growth programs provide excellent, inexpensive opportunities for people of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds to access the great game of golf.”

  • Golf action

    Bernie Gruzlewski had a hole-in-one Monday while playing in a Brierwood Men’s Golf Association event. Gruzlewski aced the 142-yard hole using a 5-wood.

    The BMGA game Monday was best ball. In first at 19 under was the team of Dave Harper, Chuck Hornfeck, Jim Pope and Rich Hornfeck. In second at 10 under was the team of Paul Salerno, Bernie Gruzlewski, Tom Bowen and Bob Janovic.

  • Simmons thanks coaches, players...

    Three days after Cedric Simmons witnessed the Chicago Bulls honor their first coach and longtime announcer Johnny “Red” Kerr, Simmons was in Shallotte for another ceremony—this one honoring him.

    “I feel really blessed to have my jersey retired,” Simmons said in an interview two days before West Brunswick High School retired his No. 44 jersey. “Anything like that is (an honor) at any level, high school or college or pro. It just shows all my hard work from high school, middle school, even when I was younger, finally paid off.”

  • Reverse raffle key fundraiser...

    The annual reverse raffle banquet March 7 is one of the three main fundraisers for the West Athletic Boosters Club, and this year it has even more importance than before.

    West athletics director John Floyd is in the first year of a projected two-year facility improvement plan, and money raised from the raffle (6:30 p.m. at the West cafeteria) helps cover costs of the improvements.

    “I feel good about where we are,” he said about the progress of the improvements.

  • Eight wrestlers qualify for state

    Eight county wrestlers have qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships this weekend in Winston-Salem.

    Wrestlers competed in state-qualifying regionals Friday and Saturday. Wrestlers had to reach the semifinals of their weight classes to qualify for state.

    Two wrestlers qualified from West Brunswick: Deven Ruane and Dee Kent.

    Ruane finished third at 152 pounds. He beat Stephen Henkel of Currituck 7-1.

    Kent finished third at 285 pounds. He beat Nick Summrell of host South Central 5-4.

  • Lady Trojans‘ slow...

    North Brunswick held West Brunswick to one point in the first quarter and went on to beat the Trojans 72-57 in a nonconference girls basketball game Friday night.

    The game, played on Think Pink Night, was the last of the regular season for both teams. West ends the regular season 9-14.

  • West unable to catch Scorpions

    Demontez Lennon scored 19 points, Anthony Gaines 13 and Reggie Cobia 11—all juniors—as North Brunswick beat West Brunswick 57-43 in the final basketball game of the regular season.

    West’s top scorer was Ryan Hill with 13 points. West ends the regular season 3-20.

    North lead 28-25 at halftime, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyshon Walker gave it a 41-29 lead with 3 minutes, 59 seconds left in the quarter.

  • BCC goes to 4-0 on Bradley'...

    The Brunswick Community College baseball team improved to 4-0 on Travis Bradley’s no-hitter Sunday afternoon against Danville Community College.

    Bradley walked two batters and struck out six in the seven-inning game at West Brunswick High School.

    Chris Eason hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give BCC a 3-0 lead. The Dolphins’ first run came when Drew Alford led off with an infield single, stole second, went to third on an error on the throw and advanced home on Jordan Davis’ groundout.
