  • Turnovers doom West in 49-21 loss

     SOCASTEE, S.C.—Socastee scored after four straight first-half turnovers by West Brunswick and went on to beat the Trojans 49-21 in a non-conference high school football game Aug. 25.

    The Trojans scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run by quarterback Taylor Buffkin on their first possession. Buffkin and Justin Bland did most of the running on the 57-yard drive, and Cameron Smith’s extra put gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead with 6:43 left in the quarter.

    The Braves scored on a 19-yard run, tying the score with 4:57 left in the quarter.

  • West loses home opener in soccer...

     The West Brunswick boys’ soccer team lost is home opener 5-0 to Laney on Aug. 24.

    Laney score three goals in the first half en route to the victory.

    West senior goalkeeper Josh Upchurch made two diving saves—six minutes into the game and nine minutes into the game—but Laney kept up the pressure and scored with about 30 minutes left. Three minutes later, Laney scored again.

    A goal with about 7:30 left in the half put Laney ahead 3-0.

  • McCumbee savors victory

    Although his face was covered by layers of dirt and sweat, the smile on Chad McCumbee’s face was unmistakable Sunday afternoon at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

    The driver of the No. 1 ModSpace Ford had just won the Allen Crowe 100 for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, leading the final 51 laps and easily pulling away in a couple late-race re-starts. A caution flag on Lap 99 could have been disastrous for McCumbee, but he got the jump on Tom Hessert on the seventh lap of overtime to win by six car lengths.

  • West girls’ tennis team loses...

     The West Brunswick High School girls’ tennis team began is 2011 season Aug. 17 with a non-conference home dual at the Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center. West lost 8-1 in a dual against Ashley that had close individual matches.

    “The season is under way, and for the first match everyone performed pretty well,” West coach Scott Mehalick said.

    “A lot of new players are in the lineup, but all of them play very well. Playing in her first match, Victoria Jordan won her singles match.”

  • Hoggard rally stuns Trojans

     WILMINGTON—The Hoggard Vikings rallied from a 21-9 fourth-quarter deficit to beat the West Brunswick Trojans 32-21 in a season-opening high school football game Friday night.

    Two touchdowns by West quarterback Taylor Buffkin—one on a 78-yard run in the third quarter—and a 45-yard touchdown by Justin Bland, also in the third quarter, had given West the 12-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Unofficially for the game, Buffkin gained 209 yards.

  • Lady Trojans sweep Pender, rally...

    The West Brunswick High School volleyball team began its 2011 season by sweeping Pender 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 in a non-conference match Aug. 16 at West.

    West’s front-row attack was too much for the Patriots to overcome, although Pender did rally make all three sets close.

    In the first set, a kill by Jasmine Jackson led to a 5-0 run off serves by Mary Morgan Inions and a 7-3 lead. Inions had an ace in the run, and a set by Kaylee Johnston led to a kill by Jackson for the final point.
