    April 27 was Golf Day in North Carolina. This was the third such occasion. It all began in 2007, when the Carolina Golf Course Superintendents Association spearheaded the effort to highlight the importance of the golf industry in North Carolina.

    The fishing season is in full swing in Brunswick County as bluefish, redfish, flounder and trout are all showing up in greater numbers and hitting well. The best fishing is now at the edges of the day in the morning and again before sunset, but there are some fish moving around just about all the time now.

     West Brunswick junior Greg Hensley shot the second-best score out of 87 golfers in the NCHSAA Class 3A Regional Monday at Reedy Creek Golf Course.

    Hensley shot 38-36—74 and qualified for the two-day state tourney next week.

    Fike’s Bailey Rose finished first, shooting a 34-36—70.

    The West Brunswick golf team finished fourth and missed qualifying for state by two strokes.

    The top three team qualified for state, and they were Fike (308), West Carteret (316) and Rocky Mount (333).

     Against the last-place team in Region 10, the first-place Brunswick Community College baseball team beat Danville Community College 12-2 in six innings and 12-2 in five innings in a doubleheader Saturday.

    BCC entered the games 16-6 and first in Region 10. Southeastern Community College was second at 17-7. The regular season ends Sunday.

    In the first game, Tory Schroff gave up five hits. He walked three and struck out five.
