  • South runs and rebounds past...

    LELAND—On the tip-off, when South’s Joey Hines outjumped North’s Reggie Cobia, about 5 inches taller than Hines, the Scorpions were going to have trouble.

    Cobia, who has an ankle injury had trouble all game because of it, had to sit for a while near the end of the first quarter. And with Shawn Sanders, the other important element of this team, out with an injury (also an ankle), that would make this Waccamaw Conference basketball game a little easier for the Cougars, who went on to win 60-39.

  • Kent, Moreno win conference...

    JACKSONVILLE—West wrestlers Joey Moreno and Dee Kent finished as champions in the Mideastern Conference wrestling championships Saturday afternoon at Jacksonville High School.

    Teammate Deven Ruane was second at 152.

    In the team competition, the Trojans finished third (127.5) behind White Oak (145.5) and perennial champion Laney (193.5).

    Moreno, runner-up last year, entered his 189-pound match 19-2. His foe, Jacksonville senior Neel Patel, entered the match 25-10.

  • Lures have come a long way in...

    It’s a season for boat shows and wandering the isles of the tackle shop. There is a lot to see out there now. Saltwater lures have come of age, and advancements in technology and wide distribution have created a huge market for artificial baits among inshore anglers. Every year lures seem to get more and more effective and the innovations of tackle manufactures get more diverse.

  • Golf action

    During the Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association Groundhog’s Cry event Monday, Diana Gruver made a hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Lion’s Paw. It was her first hole-in-one.

    In the Groundhog Cry event, players counted one net from each foursome but threw away the three highest net scores at the end of the round. And if a golfer’s shadow touched any part of the cup when he or she addressed the putt, the putt may be conceded.

  • Another honor for Mendoza, Ryan...

    West Brunswick High School quarterback Ryan Hill and West soccer forward John Mendoza will cap their high school sports careers by playing in July in the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star games.

    Mendoza is believed to be the first soccer player from West Brunswick to be selected to play in the all-star game, which features graduated seniors.

    West Brunswick coach Tripp Smith recommended Mendoza to Chip Stone, the East coach.

  • Trojans’ first...

    JACKSONVILLE—Pat Kamfolt hit a jump shot with 0.8 seconds left as West beat White Oak 64-63 in the conference basketball game Jan. 27.

    This victory was the first in the conference this season for the Trojans.

    West trailed 63-62 when coach Brad Lewis called time with seven seconds left to set up the play.

  • West wins back-to-back in MEC

    West Brunswick rallied from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Ashley 52-48 Friday in a Mideastern Coference basketball game.

    West held Ashley scoreless for nearly eight minutes in the third and fourth quarters in rallying for the victory, the Lady Trojans’ second straight in the MEC. West is 2-7 in the MEC, 9-10 overall.

    Breana Gause finished with 12 points, Kayla Padgett and Sheena Suttlemyre 11 each, Rebecca Sidelinger 10 and Jasmine Daniels eight. Gause had eight rebounds and Jackson six. Suttlemyre had four assists.

  • South Brunswick dominates in...

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—Led by tournament MVP Jeromy Roundtree, South Brunswick won its third straight Waccamaw Conference championship wrestling tournament Saturday.

    “I can’t really complain today,” said coach Jack Southern, who has been teaching at South Brunswick for 10 years. “All 14 of our kids placed.”

    As a kid, I was the geek princess. I took voice lessons, piano lessons, diction lessons and yes, violin lessons. Check out my yearbook and you’ll see I was president of the National Honor Society and I sang in the Glee Club.

    No sports.

    Then I went to Syracuse University.

    The human race—not just women’s basketball—has lost one of its greatest ambassadors.

    Kay Yow, the longtime N.C. State women’s basketball coach, ended her splendid, earthly journey Saturday, 22 years after she was diagnosed with cancer.

    Kay didn’t just sip life, she gulped it. There was too much to savor while she was living on borrowed time. Some would say miraculous time.
