LELAND—West Brunswick won four weight classes in a round-robin wrestling tournament Saturday at North Brunswick High School.

Dylan Bernier at 112, Jake Boudreau at 130, Bryan Murdaugh at 145 and Dee Kent at heavyweight were the Trojans’ first-place finishers in the North Brunswick Invitational.

Finishing second were Dalton Walker at 103 and Antaun Miller at 160.

Troy Ruane at 119 and Deven Ruane at 152 were third.

South Brunswick had the most champions—six—of the seven teams in the tourney.

SOUTHPORT—South Brunswick’s Christina Deveney hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left and Brittany Spivey made two free throws with 21.2 seconds left to force overtime, and then Deveney scored all seven of the Cougars’ final points in a 49-44 victory Friday over South Columbus.

Deveney, who scored two points in the first half, hit three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 20 points. She also had 10 rebounds. Spivey hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points in the conference game.

The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team returned to action Saturday and beat Roanoke Chowan Community College 95-64 in a Region X game at West Brunswick High School.

Lamonte Theus scored 16 points, Mi’kyel Nero 12 and Jamar Taylor 10 as BCC improved to 14-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference.

Sickness left Roanoke with only five players for the game. The game was the first for BCC since Dec. 13.

“It was good to get back on the court,” coach Walter Shaw said.

Despite water temperatures that have reached into the 40s, anglers still report spotting nice schools of red drum prowling the shallow waters. These fish will not always bite during the coldest periods, but on some days the sun warms up things enough to create a very favorable environment for targeting these winter redfish.

Red drum can often be seen “tailing” in the shallows with their noses down and rooting up food while their tails are sticking up in the air. Some of these redfish schools are huge. Finding them, however, is just part of the task of redfishing.
