     West Brunswick fell behind 9-0 and never led in an eventual 74-69 loss to West Bladen on Friday in a conference basketball game.

  • West Brunswick girls defeat West...

     Three days after a one-point loss at North Brunswick, the West Brunswick girls’ basketball team beat West Bladen 49-37.

    The home victory was the first this season in the conference for the Trojans, now 1-2 and 3-5 overall.

    Jasmine Jackson scored 25 points. In one stretch in the third quarter, she scored nine of West’s 11 points as it extended a 22-20 lead to 33-24. For the quarter, she scored 11 of West’s 13 points.

  • Lady Dolphins sweep foes in BCC...

      The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Baltimore City 67-54 and Harford Community College 73-66 in the BCC Classic on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center. Game summaries are below.

    Baltimore City 54

    BCC outscored Baltimore City 15-0 at the start of the second half en route to a 67-54 victory Friday in the BCC Classic.

    Julia Crews hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points. Syerra Troutman scored 13 points and Shanita Hampton 10.

     Quinton Morrow dribbled the length of the court for a layup with 3.7 seconds left and Brunswick Community College beat Spartanburg St. Ignatios Prep 101-100 in the opening game of the BCC Basketball Classic Dec. 15 on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

    BCC trailed 98-94 but a 3-pointer by Lawson Ahrens with 32.4 seconds left and a basket by Kameko Walls with 21.6 seconds put BCC ahead 99-98.

  • South swimmers split meet with...


    In their last meet before the holiday break, the South Brunswick High School swim teams won one dual and lost another Dec. 14 at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics Center.

    The girls beat Lumberton 107-41 but lost to Topsail 89-87. The boys beat Lumberton 83-63 but lost to Topsail 83-79.

    South’s boys had regional-qualifying times in five events. The Class 3A East Regional is Feb. 3-4. The state meet is Feb. 9-11.

    Myles Williams was second in the 200-yard freestyle in a qualifying 2:10.69. He won the 500 freestyle in 6:02.71.

  • Whiteville beats West in JV boys...

    Whiteville beat West Brunswick 40-36 in the junior varsity game Friday. A 3-pointer by O.J. Hill at the end of the first quarter gave West an 8-2 lead. Whiteville outscored the Trojans 17-7 in the second quarter in taking a 19-15 lead. Lee Johnson and Nasir Murray each scored two baskets as West took a 23-19 lead after halftime. A bounce pass from T.J. Fullwood to Johnson gave West a 27-19 lead and the quarter ended with the Trojans ahead 27-23.

    Feb. 21: Cape Fear National golf, $45. 8:30 a.m. sign-in, 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Price includes cart fee, greens fee, and prizes. Cart attendants tip is not included in price.
    March 21: Lockwood Folly Country Club, $40. 8 a.m. sign-in, 9 a.m. shotgun start. Price includes cart fee, greens fee, cart attendants and prizes.

  • Golfers donate building block in...

    Mike Mattrey worked at the bag drop at Sea Trail for 10 years and during that time he made a boatload of friends. When he died Aug. 9, those friends wanted to do something to remember him.
    They collected money among themselves and then installed a plaque at the bag drop at Sea Trail that reads, “Mike Mattrey, 1942-2011, A Friend to All”.
    The golfers had been generous and there was money left over.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf...

    The Beachcombers played their annual Christmas outing at Friday at The Valley At Eastport.
    The winner with a score of 80, net 57, was Bob Byrne. Tied for second at 66 were Bob Brownley and Bob Smith. Brownley won second on a match of cards. Byrne was voted golfer of the week.
