  • Zacek pitches North to victory...

     David Zacek, the junior southpaw ace for North Brunswick, made things look easy as the Scorpions defeated Harrells Christian Academy 5-2 Tuesday morning at West Brunswick High School.

    Zacek struck out 12 and allowed six hits and two runs in his seven innings pitched.

  • Clewis, Trojans steal one from...

      The work of three West Brunswick High School pitchers made easy work of Wallace-Rose Hill in a second-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational April 26.

    Landon Tilley, Timmy Powell and Bruce Clewis combined to strike out 11 Wallace-Rose Hill players while surrendering four hits in an 8-3 victory. Powell was the winning pitcher.

  • West JV loses in tourney

    Oak Ridge Military Academy scored nine runs in the third inning in beating the West JV 15-5 in a second-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational April 26.

    West scored in the first. Jordan Caison walked. Courtesy runner Levi Jenkins advanced to third on two passed balls. With two outs, Chandler Taylor singled home Jenkins.

  • Trojans lose opener in...

     The West Brunswick Trojans were held to three hits and lost 5-2 Monday night to the Winslow Township Eagles from New Jersey in an opening-round game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational.

    Senior pitcher Matt Riegler allowed three hits in seven complete innings. He struck out three and walked two.

    Ryan Caison was the starting pitcher for the Trojans and he allowed two runs on three hits in his two-inning stint. He walked three and struck out two.

  • North loses opening-round game...

     North Brunswick lost its first-round game in the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational 12-4 to Oak Ridge Military Academy.

    Oak Ridge took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against starter Steve Lowry off two hits and an error.

    North scored in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter Steven Linkous walked, stole second and scored on Tim Walsh’s single.

    Oak Ridge had runners on third and first with two outs in the second, but Lowry ended the inning by getting a groundout.

  • Daniels throws three-hitter in...

     Against the Harrells Christian Academy Crusaders’ varsity baseball team, West Brunswick sophomore Khyne Daniels threw a complete-game three-hit shutout as the West junior varsity won 3-0 Monday morning in the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational.

    Daniels, who is not in pitching rotation on the West JV team, struck out six and walked five in seven innings. Through April 15, the Crusaders were 10-0-1.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf...

    The Beachcombers played a 1-2-3 tournament Friday Diamond Back. Winners with a score of 108 (-28) were Jim Beairsto, Bob Smith, Bob Brownley and Gary Gutheil. In second were Dan O’Connell, Tom Culverwell and Bob Byrne at 113 (-23). Lowest gross were Bob Byrne, Charlie Shore and Gary Gutheil, all with 86s. Lowest nets were Bob Byrne, 65; Dennis McCann, 67; Reggie Auten and Gary Gutheil, 68; Dan O’Connell, Fred Ortiz and Charlie Shore, 69. Bob Byrne was voted golfer of the week.

  • Awesome AJGA tournament at St....

    Junior golf is fabulous and fun to watch. Their swings are so fluid and flexible and they play with such enthusiasm and gusto. When a junior golfer hits a great shot, you can see the result all over her or his face and in the body English.  
    On April 9-10, the American Junior Golf Association came to St. James to play a pre-season event on the Founders Course. I was there for the Sunday round, hobnobbing with the kids and their parents, observing the hard work performed by a 50-member cadre of volunteers.

  • Fishing continues to be strong...

    Water temperatures continue to climb, bringing more species to the spring fishing table. That said, the action that continues to be the strongest is the inshore redfish bite, which has been amazing all year long. Meanwhile, more keeper flounder are being landed and black drum and sea mullet are also available.

    Ashley Sloup, a charter member of The First Tee of Brunswick County, spoke to the board of directors at their March meeting. Participants of the program are often asked to speak to the board about their experience with The First Tee.
