  • He’s got a few strikes...

    It was so quiet you could hear 10 pins drop.

    Which is what Tom Gutierrez was hoping for as he rolled his final ball for a second-straight 300 game in the men’s Textile League Dec. 2 at the Cardinal Lanes Shipyard in Wilmington.

    Gutierrez’s ball slammed through all 10 pins and the celebratory noise erupted from the dozens of league bowlers in attendance who gathered to watch the final frame of the rare feat.

    The back-to-back 300s gave Gutierrez, a Winding River Plantation resident, an 837 series, just the second time he has ever had an 800 series.

  • If you can stand the cold, you...

    Plenty of spot are in the waterways of Brunswick County right now, although few people know it. These spot show up every year after the pinfish have left. A lot of folks are unaware they are still around. These are not the bigger ones you might catch in the fall, but the medium-sized silver fish. I caught 40 the other night and could have had all I wanted. They were eaten pretty quickly; fresh fried spot in December are a great treat.

  • The Island of Bermuda: always...

    This past week, Gene and I made our 19th pilgrimage to the tiny island of Bermuda and, as usual, it was perfect.

    Bermuda is in the Atlantic Ocean, directly east of North Carolina. The climate is much like ours, but a bit more temperate because the Gulf Stream runs right by it, bringing warm ocean temperatures to its shores.

  • West wins four titles in Battle...

    South Brunswick beat West Brunswick by five points to win the Battle at the Beach wrestling tournament Saturday at West Brunswick High School.

    In the seven-team high school tournament, South finished with 64.5 points and West with 59.5. North finished seventh.

    West had four champions in the round-robin tournament, a tournament in which the emphasis was on getting wrestlers as many matches as possible.

    Dylan Bernier, a junior, won the 112-pound title.

  • Lady Trojans defeat South

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—West Brunswick built a 14-point halftime lead and then withstood poor shooting in the third quarter to beat South Brunswick 43-34 Friday.

    The victory completed a season sweep.

    “We came out and played hard early, which is what we want to try to do to get a good lead and momentum,” coach James Walker said. “Probably the best first quarter we’ve had all season.”

  • South holds off Trojans for...

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—South Brunswick held West Brunswick to two points in the final two minutes and beat the Trojans 50-45 Friday.

    The victory gave the Cougars a sweep of the season series.

  • BCC Dolphins open conference...

    After losing two games in the Panhandle Shootout to nationally ranked teams, the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team opened its Region X season by winning 74-70 Saturday at USC-Salkehatchie.

    “A conference game on the road, that’s the way it goes sometimes,” BCC coach Walter Shaw said about the close game.

    BCC led 38-33 at the half but USCS took a six-point lead in the second half. The Dolphins regained the lead with about nine minutes left and hit free throws to win the game.

  • Golf action

    THE BEACHCOMBERS

    The Beachcombers played their annual old vs. young tournament at Cypress Bay. The three-round event ended Dec. 12. The winning team was the young team of Reggie Auten, Bob Brownley, Randy Cogdill, Bob Byrne, Dennis Davidson, Jack Goin, Gary Gutheil, Dan O’Connell, Dennis McCann and Jerry Morano.

  • To shop or not to shop&mdash...

    I have not shopped for myself for 11 months, 4 days, 16 hours and 30 minutes.

    My no-shopping adventure began last Jan. 2, when I decided to really clean out my clothes closet.

    Let me explain. When Gene and I built our retirement home here on the Carolina coast, I wanted a big walk-in closet. In our last home, my clothes were stuffed into a small wall closet with heavy sliding doors that often fell off the track. I dreamed of a big closet the same way golfers yearn for a single-digit handicap or a hole-in-one.
