  • Three-point shooting sparks West...

    West Brunswick scored the first 17 points and went on to beat West Bladen 72-37 in a nonconference high school girls basketball game Dec. 18.

    The 72 points were the most of the season for the Trojans (6-4).

    Four straight 3-pointers in the second quarter by Jasmine Daniels and Sheena Suttlemyre ended a West Bladen rally and clinched the victory for the Trojans.

    For the game, Daniels hit four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points and Suttlemyre hit three in scoring 13 points. Breana Gause was top scorer (21 points).

  • Trojans lose close games

    West Bladen hit four free throws in the final nine seconds to beat West Brunswick 53-47 in a nonconference high school boys basketball game Dec. 18.

    The Trojans (2-8) trailed 45-36 with 2:25 left but, a 3-pointer by Pat Kamfolt and a free throw by Alfy Hill, who was fouled on the play, cut the Knights’ lead to 45-40 with 2:02 left.

    A score by Hill and a his two free throws on the next possession left West Brunswick down 47-44 with 66 seconds left.

  • Scorpions dominate 4th quarter...

    LELAND—North Brunswick expanded a three-point lead in the third quarter to 20 points in the fourth quarter and beat Trask 68-50 in a high school boys basketball game Dec. 18.

    “Our goal is to win every quarter, and we accomplished that,” North coach Travis Lemanski said.

    At the start, the Scorpions let Trask determine the pace of the game—and that was a mistake. The Scorpions excelled at the run and gun.

  • Golf action

    On Dec. 15, the warm air returned and the Sandpiper Bay Men’s Golf Association used the format of count two best balls on par 3s, three on the par 4s and all four on the par 5s.

  • West volleyball players make all...

    Three West Brunswick High School volleyball players are on the Mideastern All-Conference team.

    Anna Hart and Carly White were selected to the first team.

    Hart, a senior, was nearly perfect in serving, completing 97 percent of her attempts. She averaged 10 kills per game, three digs per game and five blocks per game.

    White, a junior, averaged 10 kills and five blocks per game.

    Kenzie McDuffie, a junior, was MEC honorable mention. She completed 93 percent of her serves. The setter averaged 27 assists per game and two digs per game.

  • He’s got a few strikes...

    It was so quiet you could hear 10 pins drop.

    Which is what Tom Gutierrez was hoping for as he rolled his final ball for a second-straight 300 game in the men’s Textile League Dec. 2 at the Cardinal Lanes Shipyard in Wilmington.

    Gutierrez’s ball slammed through all 10 pins and the celebratory noise erupted from the dozens of league bowlers in attendance who gathered to watch the final frame of the rare feat.

    The back-to-back 300s gave Gutierrez, a Winding River Plantation resident, an 837 series, just the second time he has ever had an 800 series.

  • If you can stand the cold, you...

    Plenty of spot are in the waterways of Brunswick County right now, although few people know it. These spot show up every year after the pinfish have left. A lot of folks are unaware they are still around. These are not the bigger ones you might catch in the fall, but the medium-sized silver fish. I caught 40 the other night and could have had all I wanted. They were eaten pretty quickly; fresh fried spot in December are a great treat.

  • The Island of Bermuda: always...

    This past week, Gene and I made our 19th pilgrimage to the tiny island of Bermuda and, as usual, it was perfect.

    Bermuda is in the Atlantic Ocean, directly east of North Carolina. The climate is much like ours, but a bit more temperate because the Gulf Stream runs right by it, bringing warm ocean temperatures to its shores.

  • West wins four titles in Battle...

    South Brunswick beat West Brunswick by five points to win the Battle at the Beach wrestling tournament Saturday at West Brunswick High School.

    In the seven-team high school tournament, South finished with 64.5 points and West with 59.5. North finished seventh.

    West had four champions in the round-robin tournament, a tournament in which the emphasis was on getting wrestlers as many matches as possible.

    Dylan Bernier, a junior, won the 112-pound title.
