    The weather continues to warm, but spring inshore fishing has suddenly cooled. After a strong preseason redfish bite, the local angling has hit a surprising lull, possibly the result of some combinations of wind and tide and possibly just because it’s going to be a slow-starting fishing season.

    Freshman Landon Tilley pitched a complete-game and added a RBI double in a 5-2 victory for the Trojans (5-5) over South Columbus in a JV game played April 13 in Shallotte.
    Tilley allowed two runs in the top of the third inning, but was he masterful the rest of the game. The right-hander gave up four hits, two earned runs and struck out eight batters. Head coach T.J. Spivey was impressed by his starter’s performance since the team had not played in over a week due to spring break.

    BOILING SPRING LAKES—West Brunswick senior pitcher Carly White allowed seven hits in her seven innings pitched Friday night, and her teammates contributed with some timely hitting, as West squeaked by South 4-0 in the conference softball game.
    White struck out eight batters as her screwball has reemerged.
    “I found it,” White said.
    West is now 6-1 in the conference.
    White’s mound opponent, Madison Walker, also had a good outing, striking out six. Four of those strikeouts were in the first two innings.

    West Brunswick’s Breana Gause and Kayla Padgett had performances like those seen at state meets in a track and field meet April 13 at West.
    Padgett won the shot put (33 feet, 9 inches) and the discus throw (117-9), both regional standards. Her shot put would have placed her ninth last year at the Class 3A state meet. Her discus throw would have placed her second at state.

  • Trojan golfers shoot in 70s at...

    WHITEVILLE—The West Brunswick golf team finished one stroke ahead of host West Bladen on April 12 at Land O’ Lakes Golf Club. Three Trojan golfers shot in the 70s to seal a second-place finish, one stroke ahead of the host Knights.
    For the tournament, the conference team scores were South Brunswick 307, West Brunswick 311, host West Bladen 312, Whiteville 337, North Brunswick 351, East Bladen 393 and South Columbus 445.

    The West Brunswick baseball team won two conference games last week, 16-8 at South Columbus and 12-2 at South Brunswick.
    West is 6-1 in the conference, 12-4 overall. Below are summaries of the two victories.

  • Newcomer Padgett surging toward...

    West Brunswick junior Kayla Padgett has competed in five track and field meets in her high school career.
    In her first meet, March 16, she qualified for the state-qualifying regional in the shot put, 32 feet, 6.5 inches.
    In her second meet, March 23, she qualified for the state-qualifying regional in the discus, 98 feet.
    And she is doing better than just meeting regional standards.

  • BCC sets team record for...

    The Brunswick Community College baseball team set a team record for victories in a season by beating Wake Tech in a doubleheader Saturday at West Brunswick High School.

    BCC won 8-1 and 5-0. After a 10-2 victory Sunday, BCC is 29-11 for year, 15-2 in the conference.

    In the first game, starter Brock Holmes gave up seven hit and one run in seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Holmes also set a team record for victories in a season by a BCC pitcher, seven.
