  • West players receive soccer...

    Five players from the West Brunswick High School boys soccer team and an assistant coach have earned postseason honors.

    The N.C. Soccer Coaches Association has selected senior forward John Mendoza to the Class 3-A All-State team.

    The NCSCA also selected Mendoza and teammates Chip Mendoza, Chaz Earp and Casey Leonard to the Region 4 Class 3-A team. West’s Steve Nagy was the Assistant Coach of the Year in the region.

  • Now is good to time to fish...

    With cold weather having firmly settled in, inshore anglers are finding the going pretty tough. Unless, of course, they happen to be out looking for black drum, which are around in force and are likely to be the best thing happening until spring arrives.

    Black drum are decent fighters and good to eat, and they hit in local waters virtually year-round. Tolerant to extremes in temperature, even the coldest water doesn’t put them off the bite, which is why they are a popular fish in the winter.

  • Sportsmanship award is meaningful

    One of my co-workers at another paper was a West Virginia native and loyal fan of the Mountaineers’ football team. One time, when we were discussing football, he mentioned no matter what happens each season, West Virginia must beat the University of Pittsburgh. He couldn’t explain it, but, he said, he hated Pittsburgh.

    He was like millions of other college football fans who have intense loyalties to their alma mater and wish a slow death upon their fiercest opponents. With college football rivalries, nothing is sacred. Sportsmanship is a forgotten virtue.

  • Lady Trojans defeat South...

    West Brunswick held off a fourth-quarter rally by South Brunswick to beat the Cougars 35-31 in a nonconference girls basketball game Friday.

    West led 32-24 with 1:29 left, but South rallied on a basket by Brittany Spivey with 46.2 seconds left, a free throw by Christina Deveney with 42.5 seconds left and another free throw by Shatiqua Smith with 41.5 seconds left. Those scores cut the West lead to 32-28.

  • West’s boys split with...

    The West Brunswick High School boys basketball team ended a three-game season-opening losing streak by winning two last week.

    After a loss on Friday to South, the Eagles are 4-2 as they enter the conference season this week at Hoggard. West’s first home conference game will be Tuesday against White Oak.

    South Brunswick got its first victory of the season and ended West’s two-game winning streak Friday.

  • West Brunswick loses conference-...

    West Brunswick High School had three winners in a 58-18 loss to Laney in the first conference dual of the season Dec. 3.

    Two of the Trojans’ victories were by pin. Ted King won his heavyweight match in 22 seconds.

    Deven Raune won his 152-pound match by pin in 2:15.

    West’s other victory was by Joey Moreno at 171. In a match in which both wrestlers were on their feet for most of the time and constantly warned about stalling, Moreno won by disqualification with the score tied 5-5 in the third period.

  • Cool weather fishing proves good...

    This past week the weather broke for us a few days to get offshore and do some fishing. On Dec. 3, my wife, Amy, brother Barrett and their scuba diving instructor/friend Cameron Sebastian with Coastal Scuba joined me aboard the Carolina Cat for a day of fishing and diving.

    The plan was to run offshore to the edge of the Gulf Stream to try to catch a wahoo or two, then head inshore and do some diving and spear fishing for grouper and maybe find a lobster or two.

    The Lockwood Folly Men’s Golf Association played its red, white and blue tournament Dec. 5. Members who normally play from the white tees played three holes of their choice from each of the red, white and blue tees on the front and back nines. Members who normally play from the gold tees played three holes of their choice from each of the white, gold and red tees on the front and back nines.

  • Locals win best-of-breed in AKC...

    The 2008 AKC Carolina Youth Challenge took place Nov. 8 in Hallsboro. Many youngsters from the county had entries in the challenge, and four of the entries won best of breed.

    In the Black and Tan division, the winner was Roxy. The owner is Jeremiah Frazier, of Ocean Isle Beach. The handler is Ryan Michael.

    In the English division, the winner was Bear Branch Booger Man. The owner is Thomas Inman, of Ash. The handler is Eric Anthony.

    In the Plott division, the winner was Maple Gully Sissy. The owner and handler is Doogie Hewett of Supply.
