  • Trojan seniors, take a bow

    By the end of a season, teams have established their identity.

    Conference champions or conference patsies. Overachievers or slackers. Good sports or disgusting rogues.

    When the West Brunswick High School football season ended Friday night after a 51-27 loss to Overhills in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 3-AA playoffs, West coach Jimmy Fletcher felt good about these 2008 Trojans.

    And he was especially grateful for the way the seniors played.

  • Record start for Dolphins

    The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team made school history Saturday afternoon when it beat Wilkes Community College 113-83 and improved to a record-setting start of 8-0.

    Five Dolphins scored at least 10 points against Wilkes: Mi’kyel Nero had 18, Lamonte Theus 15, Jeremy Basnight and Andrew Jackson 14 each and Isaac Nixon 10.

    BCC won the game without 6-foot-9 center/forward Jamar Taylor (ankle injury) and 6-9 center Jeffery Monk (funeral).

    The game was close late into the first half before the Dolphins built a big lead.

  • North’s Scorpions stun...

    JACKSONVILLE—You can see it in his face, the excitement, the happiness, the relief. You can feel the emotion as coach Garry Bishop clenched his fist and raised an arm in triumph.

    The North Brunswick football team beat a higher ranked, highly touted Southwest Onslow football team. It took overtime to achieve this as the 10th-seeded Scorpions beat the seventh-seeded Stallions of Onslow 21-14 in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A playoffs.

  • Brunswick Bulldogs finish second...

    The Brunswick Bulldogs finished second in a recent two-day tournament in Pembroke. The Bulldogs, who consist of five West players, five South players and three North players, beat the Bladen Spinners 10-1 Nov. 8.

    Blake Norris pitched first three innings. He faced 14 batters and threw 63 pitches. He struck out one and walked six. He gave up two hits and no runs.

    Robert Jones pitched the fourth and fifth innings to complete the game. He faced eight batters and threw 33 pitches. He struck out three and walked one. He gave up two hits and one run.

  • McCumbee finishes NASCAR truck...

    In the final NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race of the season, Chad McCumbee finished 13th and failed to finish in the top 10 in points.

    In the Ford 200 race Friday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, McCumbee was trying to earn enough points to finish ahead of Terry Cook, who was 10th in points. But Cook finished ninth and secured the top-10 finish.

    McCumbee finished 11th in points, 73 behind Cook. In 25 starts, McCumbee finished in the top five twice and in the top 10 eight times. He failed to finish two races.

  • Schedule set for Seneca 400 at...

    Myrtle Beach Speedway’s traditional November race has picked up the support of Seneca Tobacco Co., based in Hartsville, S.C. The Seneca 400 is Nov. 20-23 and includes a $10,000 first-place payout.

    The weekend will feature the Seneca 250 for NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars, along with the Don Brewer Memorial 100 for the Super Trucks.

    Supporting races will be 50-lap Limited Late Model, Mini-Stock and Street Stock races.

  • Dye and Allen triumph in...

    In the biggest field ever in the Brunswick Beacon Tournament of Champions, 26 golfers competed under sunny skies at the Maples Course at Sea Trail this weekend.

    In a season-ending showdown between club champions from area courses, Mona Dye of Brierwood and Peter Allen of St. James became the best of the best in Brunswick County.

    Capt. Rennie Clark has been fishing the coastal waters of North Carolina for more than 25 years. In Wilmington, his charters cover inshore and offshore areas from our own Brunswick County beaches all the way to the lower Neuse River. I recently asked him for some tips and advice regarding speckled trout fishing in the winter.

    Weeks: Why do so many speckled trout anglers wait until November or December to really start fishing for trout?

    Capt Rennie: Speckled trout are in our coastal waters all year but they bunch up in deeper pockets and holes in the fall.
