  • McCumbee finishes 22nd at...

    Chad McCumbee drove his No. 71 ModSpace Chevrolet Impala SS to a 22nd-place in finish Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Talladega, Ala., Superspeedway.

    McCumbee, who started 22nd, presently pilots the No. 1 ModSpace car in the ARCA Racing Series. He had seven top-10 finishes this season. The 26-year-old made his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Pocono Raceway in the No. 45 Petty Enterprises entry in 2007 and gained additional experience in 2008 making six starts under the Petty Enterprises banner.

  • West Brunswick beats C.B. Aycock...

     PIKEVILLE—“One more time,” said West Brunswick High School soccer coach Tripp Smith after the Trojans—at one time 1-8-1 this year—beat C.B. Aycock 1-0 Nov. 2 in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

    Off an assist from senior midfielder Jack Donoghue, sophomore striker Scottie Melvin scored the winning goal with about 9 minutes left. The goal was his 19th of the season.

    The victory advances West to a second-round game on Saturday (match to be determined).

     Chad McCumbee on Saturday qualified the TRG Motorsports No. 71 ModSpace Chevrolet Impala SS in the 22nd position for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AMP Energy Juice 500 on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

    McCumbee will start from the 11th row when the green drops at 1 p.m. Going off 18th for the qualifying session, the Supply resident posted a time of 52.374 and a speed of 183 mph.

  • Trojans force five turnovers in...

     West Brunswick forced three turnovers in the second half in beating West Bladen 47-21 Friday night in a high school conference football game.

    Van Cobb scored off a blocked punt and Altrey Frink returned an interception for a touchdown as the Trojans improved to 3-2 in the Waccamaw Conference, 5-5 overall, and qualified for the NCHSAA Class 3AA playoffs, which begin Nov. 12. Taylor Buffkin, who got credit for blocking the punt, also intercepted a pass. Quan Bates intercepted a two-point conversion pass. Markel Jones recovered a fumble.

    Lees-McRae College placed five student-athletes on the 2010 Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Academic All-Conference Team, announced league officials Wednesday.

    Mary Dorn (Shallote), Brittany Bolton (Roanoke, Va.), Jessica O’Leary (Milbury, Mass.), Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and Brooke Santerre (Port Republic, Md.) were each named to the team in recognition of their outstanding academic work. This is the first time ach of these student-athletes has received this honor.

     The West Brunswick High School boys’ soccer team finished the regular season by beating South Columbus 6-0 Oct. 27 on Senior Night.

    Seniors Jack Donoghue and Matthew Volpe each scored two goals in the first half. West coach Tripp Smith started his seniors on the front line, including Rafael Dominguez, hobbled by a knee injury but getting into position to take passes from teammates as they tried to set him up for a goal. In the second half, sophomore Scottie Melvin assisted on two goals by junior Jacob Ferguson.

    Chad McCumbee will drive the No. 71 ModSpace Chevrolet Impala SS on Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Talladega, Ala., Superspeedway as ModSpace continues its partnership with TRG Motorsports, LLC as the primary sponsor.  McCumbee is expected to challenge the best drivers and cars in their 500-mile push to victory lane.

Low gross were Dennis Keane, 84, and Jim Ritter, 88. Low nets were Dennis Keane, 64; Jim Ritter, 65; Reggie Auten, 67; and Bill Cameron and Bob Byrne, 69s. Dennis Keane was voted golfer or the week.
