The Lockwood Folly Ladies Golf Association has been hosting a Rally for the Cure since 1997. Rally for the Cure is a national initiative to fund breast cancer research and awareness programs through the game of golf. It falls under the umbrella of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

This Lockwood Folly Rally for this year was Oct. 30 and raised $22,500. In total, the Lockwood LGA has raised more than $293,000 for the Komen foundation since its first Rally for the Cure.

It sure is quiet down on the coast this fall. In the midst of possibly the world’s worst economic downturn, the only ones making out to the good are the fish.

The other problem we’ve had is the wind. It seems day after day the wind blows, changes direction and then blows again. It is only supposed to blow for a couple of days, then settle down for a couple of days. Combine the unsettled weather and dismal economy and you have the recipe for rebuilding fish stocks.

My first trip to Pikeville, on a weekday afternoon, was not one for leisure. I made the two-and-one-half hour drive to cover the West Brunswick High School soccer team play in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A playoffs.

I thought it was a wasted, but necessary, trip. I arrived there tired, hungry and irritable.

JACKSONVILLE—West Brunswick’s soccer season ended in a 4-1 defeat to White Oak in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A playoffs Nov. 4.

Coach Tripp Smith’s Trojans, who have advanced to the third round three straight seasons, end the year 11-13.

The game was the third one of the season between the two conference foes. White Oak won the first two games 5-0 and 3-0. But this game was more of a struggle than the first two games, Viking coach Buddy Carroll said.
