LELAND—About the only thing the West Brunswick football team did wrong Friday night in its 40-16 victory over North Brunswick was at the end—a too hasty attempt to douse coach Jimmy Fletcher with a celebratory ice bath. (Instead, the players splashed assistant Mike Alderson.)

But the missed attempt was understandable. Last season, the Trojans had nothing to celebrate in a winless schedule. This year, the victory over the Scorpions gave the Trojans a regular-season record of 6-5.

From 0-11 last year to 6-5 this year and a spot in the playoffs, it has been a remarkable season for the Trojan football team.

“When you come off something like last year and you have a winning season,” West Brunswick High School football coach Jimmy Fletcher said, “it’s a great feeling for your players and your coaches. It just makes you feel excited.”

How did Fletcher turn around the West Brunswick High School football team?

He credits the players.

The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team improved to 5-0 by beating Surry Community College 77-65 Sunday afternoon at West Brunswick High School.

BCC fell behind 6-0 in the first 3 minutes, 16 seconds. But BCC outscored SCC 13-4 in the next 2:15 to take a 13-10 lead with 13:44 left.

Guard Lamonte Theus scored six of game-high 28 points in the run, and a 3-pointer by Cornell Holmes was the final basket.

Fishing has improved for some folks this week as anglers are beginning to focus on traditionally cold-weather species. Fish such as black and red drum, whiting and speckled trout will still provide a lot of action for folks as the fishing season comes to an end.

One winter fish that has already made a surge is the black drum. Black drum can be caught all year, but they really come to the forefront in the colder months. They are among our most dependable fish when a lot of better-known species have left for warmer waters or aren’t biting in the cold.
