Walter Shaw should be Coach of the Year every year.

Winning at least 20 games for four straight years as coach of the Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team merits such an honor.

But there is another reason he should be admired for what he has done at BCC.

He wins against incredible odds.

Consider this: If you’re a high school senior basketball player, would you want to play community college basketball at a school that has no gym? Would you want to play basketball at a school that offers no scholarships?

TABOR CITY—Those fans who braved the cold weather Monday and were looking for a good high school football game got that as the heavily favored South Columbus Stallions slipped by the previously unbeaten South Brunswick Cougars 29-22.

The Cougars have improved vastly over last year, as the score last season was 62-0 in favor of the Stallions.

BOILING SPRING LAKES—West Brunswick rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat South Brunswick 6-4 Oct. 22 in its final high school soccer game of the regular season.

The victory also clinched a spot in the Class 3-A state playoffs for West (9-12).

This is the third straight year the Trojans have made the playoffs. West will play at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at C.B. Aycock (19-1), ranked No. 7 in Class 3-A. Aycock has allowed 17 goals all season. South ends the season 2-15.

“It is really big for us,” West coach Tripp Smith said. “This is a big deal.”

The BCC women’s basketball program has struggled as it enters its fifth year of existence. Last year, the team won three games.

“Our main problem last year was that we didn’t have any substitutes,” coach Kenneth White said. “This year my goal was to bring in some top-quality players in the state of North Carolina to help us build a program. We have a bench this year, and I think this will probably be our year to turn things around.”

Three players from Brunswick County will be among those trying to give BCC a winning season.
