  • Milliken sweeps races at Myrtle...

    In NASCAR Late Model racing Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway, the two 35-lap races were swept by Justin Milliken, of Ocean Isle Beach. Milliken is a third-generation driver whose grandfather began his career in 1958. 

  • West sweeps Dixon in Junior...

    West Brunswick swept Dixon 9-7 in five innings and 16-3 in four innings in a Junior American Legion Baseball doubleheader June 21.

    West took advantage of Dixon errors to get leads in each game.

    In the first game, West scored two runs off three errors in a three-run second inning in taking a 4-0 lead.

    In the third inning, Dylan Darguzas drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single, and that put West ahead 6-0. In the fourth, a bases-loaded single by Dustin Darguzas gave West an 8-3 lead.

  • BCC baseball field could be in...

     Work has resumed on the BCC baseball field. BCC coach and athletics director Robbie Allen said drainage work began last week.

    “We’ll do the irrigation, the sod, dugouts and fencing,” he said about the next steps in the process.

    “We’ll have it ready to play on, hopefully, somewhere around September.”

  • County baseball players win gold...

     Three county baseball players won gold medals as members of Region 2 in the Powerade State Games this weekend, and all three made significant contributions to the championship effort.

    West Brunswick’s Markel Jones and Landon Tilley and North Brunswick’s Steven Linkous played for Region 2 in the four-day tourney of eight North Carolina all-star baseball teams. Each region consisted of players from several counties.

  • West beats Ashley on Jones’ 11th...

     Markel Jones’ leadoff home run in the bottom of the 11th inning ended a nearly four-hour baseball game in humid weather Monday evening and gave the West Brunswick Junior American Legion Baseball team an 8-7 victory over Ashley.

    Jones’ home run also made a winner of reliever Hunter Howard. He pitched the final five innings, giving up three hits and no runs. He walked two and struck out seven.

  • Ryan Caison throws two-hitter in...

     

    WHITEVILLE—Ryan Caison threw a two-hitter through six innings as West Brunswick routed Whiteville 11-3 in a Junior American Legion Baseball game Friday at Legion Stadium.

    Caison gave up one earned run and two unearned runs. He walked one, hit one and struck out seven. Hunter Howard pitched a scoreless seventh as West improved to 7-2 overall.

    Six West batters had two hits each and West loaded the bases four times in the first five innings.

  • West splits with Laney in Junior...

    The West Brunswick Junior American Legion Baseball team split two games June 16 with Laney. West lost the first game 7-6 but won the second game 11-2.

    West played without infielders Landon Tilley and Markel Jones, members of Region 2 in the Powerade State Games of North Carolina.

    In the first game, West made four errors and had no hits when it entered the bottom of the fifth trailing 7-0. West scored six runs off two hits, three errors and three walks. With the tying run on third with one out, the game ended on a fly ball and a groundout.
