  • Trojans JV football team fights...

The West Brunswick Trojans’ JV football team used another stellar rushing performance to outlast South Brunswick Thursday night in Shallotte, winning 26-22. In a game that featured several long runs from each squad, the Cougars’ final drive fell short at the West 31-yard line, preserving the Trojan win.

  • Willie Fulford finishes ahead of...

Willie Fulford and dad Dub battled for the lead in the closing laps of the Mini-Stock race Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway, and it was Willie who won 20-lap race. This was his third victory of the season.

The Limited Late Model race also proved to be an exciting one, as Kevin Barnhill and Randal Roberts battled for second straight for the win. The result was the same, however, as Barnhill used the outside to his advantage to pass the defending champion and points leader on lap 17 in taking his second consecutive victory and his third overall of the season.

  • Annual mullet run off to an...

The recent dip into autumn-like temperatures had anglers hoping fish would start gearing up for the fall runs. That didn’t exactly happen, but we are still seeing good fishing with quite a few big flounder, redfish and trout now out there around their usual inshore haunts.

If fishing is this good now, it is possible this fall season will make up for last year’s disappointments.

When Mother Nature flipped the switch, she did not hold back. It has gone from summer to fall in a hurry, and I am not complaining.

The mullet have been running the beach and the menhaden schools are lined up along the beachfront from Ocean Isle Beach to the Cape Fear. All the pieces are in place for one of the best fall king mackerel bites we’ve seen in years.

  • Lennon Hills: Green Golf Course...

There’s a new golf course community called Lennon Hills right off Route 211 near Virginia Williamson Elementary School.

Driving to Southport one day, I saw a sign that read “Green Golf Course Community.” I was curious, so I drove back in there, following a winding road maybe a mile or so until I saw a formal entrance, a couple of model homes and, beyond the trees, a golf course.

  • Trojans avenge playoff loss...

The West Brunswick High School boys’ soccer team avenged a 2008 season-ending playoff loss by beating White Oak 3-2 Friday.

“We’ve had the date circled on our calendar for quite some time,” West soccer coach Tripp Smith said. “That game got scheduled in June, and the boys have talked about it all summer.”

West, unranked and unnoticed, had stunned many by reaching the third round of the playoffs before losing at White Oak in the 3A playoffs.
