  • Markatoses win Sea Trail couples...

    The Sea Trail Plantation Couples Golf Championship was played Aug. 7-8 on the Byrd and Maples courses, using the Ryder format. 

    The overall champions were Sharon and John Markatos with a score of 163.5. In better ball for nine holes, the winners were Lorraine and Ed Kazan with a score of 30. In modified alternate shot, the winners were Sharon and Charlie Winter with a score of 28.25. In captain’s choice, the winners were Dick and Joanna Brawley with a score of 25.25. In aggregate score, the winners were Ron and Madeline Dubas with a score of 66.5. 

  • Boob, Milazzo win Brierwood Golf...

    The Brierwood Golf Club men’s and women’s championships were played Aug. 14-15.

    The field was divided into three flights, based on the scores from the first day of play. Prizes were awarded for first and second low gross and first and second low net. Overall low gross was the overall champion.

    The overall men’s club champion was Randy Milazzo. 

    In the championship flight, the low gross winner was Randy Milazzo. Chris Lane was second. The low net winner was Bill Tonking. Pete Kolvik was second.

    An all-you-can pizza and putt-putt golf event will take place from 5-9:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Bridge Grill in Sunset Beach. “Proceeds go to American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” Shirley Tacchetti said.

    The team of Marianne Nobes, Glen Green, Bob Nobe and John Beavers finished first at at 2-over par in the Brierwood nine-hole mixed scramble Aug. 11. Fran Thomas, Rita DuGan, Ron Arvidson and Ralph Trimmer were second.

  • PREVIEW: South capable of making...

     The second football season for South Brunswick High School head coach Roman Kelley begins 7:30 p.m. Friday at Midway.

    “I’m very excited about the season,” he said. “Our kids have worked really hard during the summer, and we are looking to take the season, one game at a time. We have our first game with Midway and then Ashley comes into town, and then we go on from there.”

    The Cougars squared off Friday in the BB&T Jamboree against New Hanover High School, who went to the eastern finals last year.

  • PREVIEW: Linemen to be a key to...

     Despite having graduated six players who have accepted college offers, and despite losing two linemen to offseason knee injuries, West Brunswick High School football coach Jimmy Fletcher has high expectations for this season.

    “I know we won eight last year,” he said, “but I want to be better. I want to win the conference. I want to take it to the next level in the playoffs.”

    West returns five starters on offense, including most of the backfield.

     LELAND—The high school football season starts Friday, and former East Carolina University and New England Patriots’ running back Tony Collins talked Saturday to North Brunswick and Topsail football players about the college football recruiting process.

     “If you have not received a letter from a college and you’re starting, guess what? (College coaches) don’t know who you are,” he said. “They don’t know where you are. So you got to get the process started.”

    LELAND—North Brunswick High School enters the 2010 season with an experienced offense and a yet-to-be-tested defense.

    On offense, the Scorpions return four senior linemen: Tylan Kelly (6-0, 245), Joshua Richburg (5-11, 205), Robert Bowens (5-7, 208) and center Zach Sellers (5-11, 269).

    Jirese Thomas (5-10, 192) returns at fullback. Last year he averaged 10.4 yards a carry and gained 505 yards, second most on the team. He was a second-team all-conference selection.

    The Brierwood Men’s Golf Association format for Aug. 5 was one best ball on the par 4s and two best balls on the par 3s and par 5s.

    The winners at -20 were Tom Arney, Odie Johnson, Paul Salerno and Gary McDaniel. In second at -18 was the team of Bernie Gruzlewski, Jim Pope, David Harper and a draw. The team of Harvey Hundley, Chuck Hornfeck and George Edwards finished third at -12.
