I am really starting to annoy myself with my own writing. Week after week I’ve reported how the fishing is “just about to crank up,” “almost here.” Yet here we are, still waiting. However, I can’t take the blame as Mother Nature has been throwing curveballs at us fishermen for the past several weeks.

The first major fundraiser for The First Tee of Brunswick County raised more than $50,000 for the local chapter.

Played Sept. 23 at The Thistle Golf Club in Calabash, The First Tee Walmart Invitational Golf Tournament pulled teams and individual golfers from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach, S.C. All three Brunswick County Walmart stores sponsored the event, with Brent Guice of the Shallotte store acting as liaison. Walmart is a major national sponsor of The First Tee.

The Ocean Ridge Ladies Golf Association had an individual match play Sept. 24 at Lion’s Paw. The winners were Erma Krahl, Mickie Underhill, Linda Johnston, Maureen Cotter, Ammie Sullivan, Valerie Ratchford, Pam Bank and Doris Fairchild. Birdies: Erma Krahl at No. 16. Chip-ins: Erma Krahl at No. 4 and Ammie Sullivan at No. 8 and No. 10.

The Ocean Ridge Men played their annual match play tournament Sept. 17, Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 at Lion’s Paw, Panther’s Run and Panther’s Run. There were nine flights of eight players each. The final results:

Bemused, I read the e-mails of the golf results sent to me Sept. 5—the day Tropical Storm Hanna hit the area.

My thought: Perfect British Open weather. Wish I were out there playing, too.

At least four leagues completed their rounds that day, just before the heavy rain and gusty winds smothered the county. And I suppose they were thinking the same thing I was: So this is what it’s like to play in the British Open. Great.
