GREENSBORO—Ever since last spring, when Kayla Padgett first picked up the shot (and threw it as if it were a softball) and first threw the discus (as if it were a Frisbee disc), she has been surprising everyone with her victories.

Friday at the NCHSAA Class 3A state track and field meet at North Carolina A&T State University, Padgett, a West Brunswick High School senior, had one more surprise: on her final throw in the shot put, she set a Class 3A record with a mark of 42 feet, 7 inches.

“I didn’t see that one coming,” she said

A one-out single in the top of the seventh inning by Brian Hardy scored sophomore pinch runner Sammy West and helped North Lenoir beat West Brunswick 4-3 in a first-round game of the NCHSAA Class 3A state baseball playoffs May 12.

The Hawks (17-8) overcame stellar defensive plays by the Trojans (11-11) in advancing to the second round.

The game featured coaches who have won state championships, and North Lenoir’s Jim Montague said senior starting pitcher John Delaney and junior reliever Caleb Kearney were both sick the day before the game.

  • Scorpions finish season 10-8

North Brunswick sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Stalnaker is hit by the foot of a Topsail player but deflects the ball from the goal during the soccer playoff game May 11 at North. The Scorpions, with three seniors on the 16-player roster, lost 7-0 and finish the season 10-8. See more photos here.
