    First flight, gross: Judy Nicoletti (151). First flight, net: Phyllis Welch (135). Second flight, gross: Betty Kibblehouse (186). Second flight, net: Bev Farmarco (149). Third flight, gross: Sue Greiner (210). Third flight, net: Nancy Sneska (152).

    On Sept. 18, Judy Nicoletti had the fewest putts (25) and low gross (76). Phyllis Welch had the low net (68).

    Dottie Russo chipped in at No. 2. Birdies: Dawn Rubin at No. 2 and Judy Nicoletti at Nos. 4 and 7.

  • BCC wins first-ever volleyball...

    With five Brunswick County players on the roster, the Brunswick Community College volleyball program played and won its first-ever match Sept. 10.

    Before a crowd that filled nearly three-fourths of one side of the West Brunswick High School gym, the Dolphins beat the Lenoir Community College Lancers 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22.

  • Yarbrough wins Myrtle Beach...

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Shallotte driver Sam Yarbrough clinched the Late Model Stock Car championship Saturday night at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    Yarbrough drove conservative races in the final Whelen NASCAR Late Model Stock Car races of the season at the historic track. Yarbrough, driving his family-owned Late Model, made sure the championship would be his by finishing fifth in the first race and eighth in the second.

  • Inspiring others to run

    After talking about running to Joe Yalch, you’d probably be inspired to run 3 miles.

    At South Brunswick High School, at least 28 students are willing to do so as members of the Cougars’ cross-country team.

    Twenty-eight—that’s the size of some Class 1-A football teams.

    Yalch, in his first year as head cross-country coach, is an inspiration himself. He decided he wanted to run a marathon, and did so two years ago—after he trained rigorously.

  • Couple's trip to Quebec...

    In the winter months when it’s cold outside, many of us sit in front of our fireplaces and plan trips. I have a suggestion. Instead of thinking of Alaska or far west or a Caribbean Island, why not plan a trip to Quebec for next summer? Then, when the temperature and humidity soars on the Carolina coast, you’ll be playing the links in slacks and a sweater.

    My husband and I have been to Quebec three times—on our honeymoon, then for a family reunion and just a few weeks ago for a second romantic trip a deux.

    The Ocean Ridge couples tournament played Sunday at Panther’s Run was a modified Stableford format.

    First at -92 was the team of Gordon and Kathy Wicke and Bob and Mary Kish. Second at -80 was the team of Bob Larkin II, Doris McLaughin and Pete and Becky Williams. Tying for third at -76 were the teams of Ed and Di Gruver and Roger and Linda Buck, and Lynn and Beverly Furman and Larry and Diane Wright. Tying for fifth at -75 were the teams of Allen and Judy Keegan and Brian and Toni Roe, and Chappy and Peggy Jones and Bob and Grace Bradicich.

  • Ocean Isle Beach surfers win...

    Ocean Isle Beach once again can claim to have two of the best surfers on the East Coast.

    The East Coast Surfing Championships—the oldest-running surfing contest in the United States and the largest on the East Coast—took place Aug. 21-24 at Virginia Beach, Va. Jesse McCrery won the Masters Championship (for those 18-34) and Owen Moffett the Men’s Championship.

    Michael Powell, a former Men’s Division champion, finished second in the Open Championship.

  • Bicyclist rides again to raise...

    Bike rider and fundraiser are inseparable words to describe Roy Cundiff.

    On Saturday and Sunday, the Sea Trail resident will participate in Bike MS. This is a 150-mile bike ride from and to New Bern to raise funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States.

    “To me,” Cundiff said, “it’s a good cause. Secondly, it’s good exercise. And it’s a goal, my objective for the year.”

  • Poole, Dub Fulford lead in...

    MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Thomas Poole won for the 13th time in 17 Street Stock races this season at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

    In the race Aug. 30, Poole, the defending points champion, finished ahead of Dean Cumbee, Kent Bellamy, Clay Gossett and David Hatchell.

    Poole, a Brunswick County driver, has a 56-point lead over Cumbee for the season title.

    In Mini-Stocks, Lucas Williams won for the first time this season. Adam Fulford was second, defending points champion Ronnie Campbell third, Dub Fulford fourth and Willie Fulford fifth.
