This weekend the annual Yellowfin/OIFC.com Jolly Mon King Classic fishing tournament will be hosted from the Ocean Isle Fishing Center at Ocean Isle Beach. The Jolly Mon tournament has been in the Ocean Isle area since 1992 and has grown to host more than 300 fishing teams from throughout the Southeast.

The winner last year was Keith Logan of Holden Beach aboard the Logan’s Love. Keith and crew boated a 36-pound king to take home first place and more than $20,000 in prize money.

  • The undisputed best way to catch...

For Southern inshore saltwater anglers, speckled trout can be a frustrating fish. For one thing, there is the speckled trout’s infamously fickle nature, which means specks tend to hit in runs that can start suddenly and end just as quickly. It also means trout will often strike a particular bait or lure one day (or one hour) and want something else the next.

  • Sandpiper Bay continues...

I like to hear about positive actions taken by our golf communities in the face of a down economy. It shows a belief in the long-term viability and profitability of the golf industry in Brunswick County.

Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club is in the second phase of renovating it course. Last year, it installed new MiniVerde Ultradwarf Bermudagrass on the Sand Nine. This summer, the process is continuing on the Piper Nine.

Tim Tilma, the general manager of Sandpiper Bay, is delighted the ownership of the golf course complex is continuing with the renovation.

WHITEVILLE—The West Trojans Junior American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday with Whiteville at Legion Memorial Stadium, losing the first game 10-2 but winning the second game 6-1.

Lorenzo Pigott was the winning pitcher in the second game, giving up five hits. He walked one and struck out four in the five-inning game.

West (2-3) scored a run in the first. With one out, Colby Cannon singled. Nick Napolitano reached on an error. Pigott singled home the run.

  • Spring season leaves plenty of...

Some lasting moments from the high school spring sports season:

Perfect in conference: The North Brunswick baseball team finished 12-0 in the Waccamaw Conference and advanced to the fourth round of state playoffs. The South Brunswick girls’ soccer team finished unbeaten in the Waccamaw Conference and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

  • West Brunswick foe, Eastern...

Lake Norman built a big lead and then held off Eastern Wayne 8-7 Saturday in the third and final game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

Among the teams Eastern Wayne beat to reach the series was West Brunswick, winning 6-4 in the fourth round.

  • McCumbee finishes 13th at Texas...

After two sets of pit stops throughout the race for the crew to work on the handling of the tiwi Chevrolet, Chad McCumbee was able to hold on to an ill-handling truck to finish 13th at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night.

McCumbee started seventh and quickly moved up to fourth in the opening laps of the race. But fighting a tight chassis that was putting additional stress on the right front tire, McCumbee remained patient on the track until the first round of pit stops, which came under yellow following a caution on lap 40 of the 167-lap event.

  • Flounder tournament begins...

The 26th annual Sudan Daredevils Flounder Tournament takes place Friday and Saturday. Last year the winner was decided by 0.01 pounds. Jeff Shaver’s winning weight of 7.27 pounds edged Randy Parnell’s weight of 7.26 pounds. Ricky Lefler had the five heaviest flounder (19.39 pounds).

Mike Potts, one of the organizers, said he expects competitors in 100 to 130 boats to take part in the tournament. The captains’ meeting will be from 6-10 p.m. June 11 at the Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department.

  • Catching a flying fishing rod is...

Do I have a fish story for you.

Last weekend I was flounder fishing on foot around the Sunset Beach Bridge. If you know the old bridge area, you know it’s beside the new bridge they are building, where a lot of old pilings are on their sides. I was on the island side, on the opposite shore from the new bridge construction.
