  • Piers are the place for pluggers...

    You can walk the length of a local fishing pier in the fall and pass many rows of bottom-fishermen. First, there will be a few guys drowning minnows for flounder, and then gobs of spot anglers bunched up in hordes hoping for a run of fall yellow-bellies. These are generally calm people. Eventually, however, as you reach the deep end of the pier you may find a diverse pod of frenzied guys and girls casting and re-casting small plugs out into the water, lures that look for all the world like thin pencils with colored heads and three dangerous treble hooks attached to them.

  • A caddie's journal of...

    On Aug. 25 through Sept. 1, I traveled with Dalton Gore as his chaperone and caddie to Pebble Beach, Calif., for the Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. What follows is my journal account of key events, observations and thoughts.

    Tuesday, Aug. 26

    Up early and prepare to go to tournament registration. As we start to leave, Gary McCord and Ben Crenshaw are seated at the pro registration table. We are pumped.

    Stop by and get our practice times for Del Monte today and Pebble tomorrow. Off to range to hit balls and warm up.

  • Chris Cates plays to the golf...

    During the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception Aug. 25 in Pinehurst, a young man got up from my table, grabbed a guitar, went to the microphone and sang a song that had everyone laughing out loud.

    The name of the ditty was “Triple Bogey with 17 Holes to Play.” It chronicled a golfer’s agony when he’s practiced hard all summer and has a meltdown of epic proportions on the very first hole of play.

  • Hanna hollers, 'Fore,...

    Despite a tropical storm watch and the impending arrival of Hanna, golfers got in their rounds of golf Sept. 5. At least four leagues played Sept. 5, the day Hanna’s rain and wind first swept through the area.

    BEACHCOMBERS

    The Beachcombers played Sept. 5 at Cypress Bay. In the team Stableford format, Bob Devore, Matt Beairsto and Jim Beairsto were first at +3.5.

    The low-gross winner was Matt Beairsto (75). Stu Cleveland shot an 81, Jim Beairsto an 88 and Paul Michal an 89.

  • 'It's a great day to...

    “It’s a great day . . .

    . . . to be a Trojan.”

    Led by assistant coach Yogi Hickman, 39 West Brunswick football players chanted loudly in their locker room after a season-opening 35-22 victory over Socastee Friday night at M.H. Rourk Stadium.

    The victory ended a 12-game losing streak—the Trojans last won a game in 2006—and inaugurated what Hickman hopes will be a long-lasting tradition.

    “It’s a great day . . .

    . . . to be a Trojan.”

  • Trolling for fish photos

    When I accepted this job, one of the tasks I was given was to sort through the fish photos this paper receives each week, write captions for them and get them in the paper as soon as possible.

    My first thought was, “Ugh. That will just take up space for my sports photos.”

    But I decided I would do what I was told. If that’s the worst part about this new job, I would have no complaints.

  • Get ready--September signals...

    September’s arrival signals the beginning of the fall fishing season, although it doesn’t always signal the arrival of fall fishing. The water temperature is often slower to cool down than the anglers are to warm up. There is no doubt, however, things are about to get a lot more interesting for anglers in our local waters.

  • Knot Kiddin' crew wins...

    Fishing on the appropriately named Knot Kiddin’ in the Brunswick Islands Saltwater Classic Saturday, David Mason’s crew landed the winning catch: a 48.70-pound king mackerel.

    “That is a big king mackerel,” said Hampstead resident Bill Collins, upon whose fishing line the fish struck.

    The catch also paid dividends in prize money. The Knot Kiddin’ crew of Collins, Mason, Matthew Collins and Zachary Mason earned $28,260.

  • Golf action

    The final results of the second flight of the Sea Trail Ladies Club Championship golf tournament have been tallied. Mary Couch was first in low gross, shooting 91-104-96—291. She finished one stroke ahead of Sharon Markatos, who shot 96-94-102—292. Markatos was the low-net winner (68-69-74—211).

    Complete results of the club championship ran in the Aug. 28 edition.

    The Men’s Club Tournament was Aug. 26. The format was two best nets.

    Are you a CPA? You will probably be a member of the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants). Do you like to garden? There are many garden clubs in our area. Rotary Clubs allow business people to interact for mutual benefit. The Red Cross contains a legion of volunteers who will be front and center when a hurricane approaches the Carolina coast.
