  • BCC beats Albemarle; now 7-1 in...

    The Brunswick Community College baseball team rallied for two conference victories over the weekend at the College of The Albemarle.

    BCC won 9-7 and 14-6 Sunday in the games played at Pasquotank High School. The conference losses were the first of the season for Albemarle (6-2).

    In the first game, Albemarle led 6-1 after two innings. BCC tied the scored 6-6 and then scored three runs in the seventh in the nine-inning game.

  • Golf action

    Club 25 began its 2010 season with a tournament March 22 at the Founders Club at St. James Plantation. Elaine Pipino from Carolina National led the excitement of the day with a hole-in-one on the 97-yard 16th hole.

    The first flight was won by Barb Eckroth (The Legends) with an 83. She was followed by Mary Barclay (St. James). Dale Calhoon (Brick Landing) and Shari Hodson (The Lakes) tied for third. Barb Guhl (Pine Valley) finished fifth and Dianne Belair (Prestwick) sixth.

  • Lane strikes out 13 in West...

     Gavin Lane struck out 13 batters and walked no one in pitching West Brunswick to a 2-0 victory Tuesday night over East Bladen.

    Lane, a left-hander, gave up six singles in the seven-inning, conference-game victory.

    “If we can get outings like that from him on Tuesday, we’ll be in good shape,” West coach Mike Alderson said.

    His strikeouts ended East Bladen rallies in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

  • Track season already exciting in...

     Just two weeks into the high school track-and-field season, indications are this could be a memorable year for county athletes.

    South Brunswick junior Ryan Minor threw the discus 173 feet March 25 at South. The school-record throw qualified easily him for a state-qualifying regional May 15. The throw also easily would have won the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3A state meet last year (161-3).

  • Lady Trojans’ rally...

     WHITEVILLE—West Brunswick fell behind 3-0 and then rallied for two goals before losing 3-2 to Whiteville in a conference soccer game March 24.

    Whiteville took a 3-0 lead with 21 minutes, 26 seconds left in the game, but the Trojans dominated thereafter.

    About two minutes after Whiteville score, West sophomore Julianna Zio scored on a penalty kick. She lined a low shot through the left side of the goal.

  • West Brunswick opens conference...

     West scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat South Brunswick 8-0 March 16 in the first conference softball game of the season.

    Carly White gave up six hits in the shutout. She walked four and struck out eight in the seven-inning game.

    Kristi Vance, the No, 8 hitter in the lineup, was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run and one RBI in the game between the only Class 3A teams in the conference.

  • West Brunswick routs East Bladen...

     The West Brunswick girls’ soccer team rebounded from two shutout defeats in The Brittney over the weekend by routing East Bladen 8-1 Monday in the first game of the conference season.

    West scored its first goal three minutes into the game. A pass from freshman Karson Lewis set up a goal by Sheena Suttlemyre.

    Four minutes later, Nicole Turner scored on a shot from outside the box.

  • Underclassmen help West beat...

     WHITEVILLE—West Brunswick beat Whiteville 6-3 in a conference dual March 17.

    “Our underclassmen, behind Jason Huff, Jason Watts and Justin Davis, led the way in our win,” West coach Bob Bell said.

    “We fell behind 3-1 after the first matches were played, with the lone win a tiebreak victory by No. 3-seed freshman Jason Watts,” Bell said.

    Huff and Davis won the fifth- and sixth-position matches, and West entered into doubles tied 3-3 with three matches left.

  • Lady Trojans defeat Scorpions in...

    LELAND—The West Brunswick Lady Trojans had little trouble in defeating the North Brunswick Lady Scorpions 9-0 in a conference softball game Friday night.

    Despite three errors by the Trojans, two in one inning, the West squad did not panic as Carly White allowed one hit. The dominant White also struck out nine and did not walk a batter in seven innings in her third straight shutout victory.

    West wasted no time in scoring in the first as freshman Alex Wickel tripled to deep left field and scored on a bad relay.

  • West JV wins St. Patrick's...

    The West Brunswick junior varsity won the North Myrtle Beach St Patrick’s Day softball tournament, beating North Myrtle Beach 18-7 and Socastee 10-2, a game in which Kim Cook pitched a no-hitter.

    “This is the first tournament championship for the West Brunswick High School JV team in school history,” coach Mark Jones said.

    Against Socastee in the title game, Cook struck out eight and walked four.
