  • Great weather, great fishing...

    As I had hoped, last week’s bad weather was balanced by incredibly good weather this past week. As a result, the fish, too, decided to balance themselves as well, and they went on the feed this week.

    The king mackerel bite turned on red-hot at many favorite locations. The Jungle and 65-Foot Hole were two of the best, but Christina’s ledge, 390/390 and Shark Hole were also producing good fish.

  • Youth program teaches golf, life...

    I have been involved with youth programs for most of my life. Gene and I had four daughters and for years we were immersed in Girl Scouts, church youth groups, softball teams, gymnastics, a children’s choir, and the junior golf program at our club.

  • Golf action

    SANDPIPER BAY MGA

    On July 21 Al Bowman, 79, beat his age by five strokes, shooting a 74 for the day. Bowman was playing with Ralph Bowman, Hal Foley and Butch Reeves.

    On July 23, the game was “Man in the Box.” Post the three best balls per hole but each player must be designated to play every fourth hole, where his score must be used. Post just three best balls for holes 17 and 18.

  • Brunswick Dixie Boys finish...

    SOUTHPORT—Brunswick County pitchers held Columbus County to three hits but Columbus went on to beat Brunswick 3-1 and win the Dixie Boys state championship Friday at Smithville District Park.

    A leadoff home run by Gary Williams against Grayson Bullock gave Brunswick County, a team of 14-year-olds, a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

  • Trojans advance to state...

    CARY—Facing elimination, the Southwest Trojans won two games Sunday in the Eastern qualifier and advanced to the Junior American Legion state championship series.

    The series began Wednesday in Kinston, and the state championship game will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday. This is the second time the Trojans—coached in the qualifier by David Batten and Brian Walker along with manager Mike Alderson—will play in the state series.

  • Heady resigns as A.D.

    Marcia Heady has resigned as athletic director at West Brunswick High School to become an assistant principal at Shallotte Middle School.

    Heady preferred not to comment further about her resignation until action is taken by the Brunswick County Board of Education on her replacement, but the Brunswick County Schools Web site already lists her as an assistant principal at SMS. The board meets on Aug. 5.

    Interviews to fill Heady’s position were being conducted last week.

  • After DNF, McCumbee prepares for...

    Chad McCumbee and MRD Motorsports couldn’t wait to get to Kentucky Speedway to get back on track with their early season successes. The team has excelled on the 1.5-mile tracks on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule and really felt it could capitalize in the Bluegrass state.

    Chad and Team MRD had finished the first half of the year inside the top 10 in the championship chase and didn’t see any reason why they wouldn’t continue to march forward in the standings.

    Major League Baseball recently had a nationwide audition for new versions of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.”

    It received many interesting video entries, some displaying peculiar musical idiosyncrasies.

    I, too, have been thinking about the many ways “Ball Game” can be sung. And I know the one person I wish were alive to play and sing it: Thomas “Fats” Waller.
